Fuel gauge problems 9-5 Estate

Have a problem on the 9-5.

Nothing too major, just a niggle for me, the missus though

When driving occasionally (twice a week, maybe more/less) the gauge drops to the bottom, fuel light on. After 5-10 mins it clears and shows the correct reading.

The SID keeps a constant DTE.

Any ideas? Anything known to be a problem before I resort to pulling the dash out and checking the connections?

Not come across that before, disconnect the battery for 15 minutes , see if it resets itself.
