My 9-5, usually perfectly functional, struggled to start a couple of nights ago when I parked with the near side on a high kerb. I eventually rolled it off the kerb on the starter and it barked into life with a rich running smell.

It was full temp when I left it, and it was parked for about 10 minutes while I picked someone up.

My best guess, leaky injector pooling in the intake manifold? Usually OK on the flat but all poured into cylinder 1 or something when on an angle?

If anyone's suffered similar, I'd appreciate a heads up.

There's a tilt sensor under the driver's seat, these can play up sometimes.

Alright bud! Merc is being preened ready for sale. Went swedish for the replacement, so far so good except this starting affair.

It may be related but the battery decided on retirement this weekend, spent 3 days bump starting it in the peaks. I think the battery weakness has been related to the SID telling me the headlamps/tail lights are broken for a few weeks, when they're not, so it may be that it's been befuddling other things.

Tail lights are normally the wiring by the boot fraying. Easy & Quick fix.

Judging by my weekend experience, it's more of a hot starting issue than angle related.

I also saw on the M5 a fluctuation in boost pressure under constant throttle. Enough to feel the surging. I'm guessing the boost control valve and hopefully it's related to hot starting.

Ok, just an update for anyone with a similar problem, I traced it back to the crank sensor, 15 mins under the car with a Tx30 socket and all is now well.

Also fitted a new APC valve which seems to have smoothed things out.

Unless you have fitted an aftermarket boost gauge, then no. The 'boost' gauge in a 9-5 is not a real boost guage, it's an 'electronic torque request meter' wink

Awww... Well I'm still telling people it's a boost gauge.

It's the first turbocharged car and first FWD car I've ever owned and I'm still enjoying the novelty at the minute.

That's fine smile to all intents it is an electronic representation of boost from calulations performed by the ECU. The needles range of movement can even be adjusted by Tech2.
Just don't use it for assessing 'real' boost issues/problems.

I see, I'll keep it in mind. In this case it was a secondary indicator, as initially I could feel a hunting accel/decel whilst on cruise, which I thought may be a CC issue but then it started doing it while off cruise too.

During this hunting I noticed a wavering in the needle, had a look around and asked about and the APC valve was pointed at. Seems to have done the trick so far.
