I'm about to change job to one with a longer commute (driving'wise).

As I'll be doing circa 50 miles each way (almost all motorway miles), I need to change my daily drive to something diesel, and the Saab 9-5 TiD V6's have cause my eye.

With the budget I have 2-3K I have found a few on '51 plates at around 130-160K miles.

Are these a good bet for reliability ?
Are there any common faults that I should look out for ?
What are the real world fuel comsuption figures like ?

Any advice welcomed.

Thanks.

Personally I would steer clear, these engines have a reputation for dropping liners (usually from about 80k onwards), enough to write the car off, as the repair costs will be more than the car is worth. Better to go for the 2.2TiD even if it sounds like a tractor a tickover, or the 1.9TiD

The petrol engine cars especially the Aero are much more reliable and actually give decent mpg on a long run.

Hope that helps

I had an 04 from new to Oct 08 (4 1/2 years).

Up to 108k a very reliable car.

Mine let let me down with a failed fuel pump. Had a second hand one fitted, it started to show similar symptons at 120k so I traded it in.

The pre 04 models, like the earlier thread mentioned, had a reputation for dropping cylinder liners.

The 3.0 TiD will only return about 35 - 36 mpg, so not the most economical car on the road.

Have had loan cars with the 1.9 Tid engine, and to be honest, not the nicest car to drive. In my opinion the engine doesn't have enough power for the weight of the 9-5 body. It felt like the engine was working haerd all the time.
