Call all 2.8T owners.

if anyone is suffering from a misfire at WOT the issue is spark plugs. Vauxhall have changed the plug specs to be a cooler type and have been replacing the plugs with the new cooler type when customers have misfire issues on the vectra VXR, but saab have only been using these plugs from 08 onwards on the turbo X and hence are not aware of the new cooler plug for '06 - '08 V6 aeros (still shows the old plug part numbers). luckly the dealer was able to cross reference the Vx parts against saab numbers and figured it out.

the plugs cost around £55 for the set.

and also a recall for the coolant header tank (3rd revision), the last one had started leaking again after 15K.

my dealer was unable to replicate the problem either, it took me a good few trips to the dealer for them to experience the misfire.

My suggestion is to take the mechanic for a trip with you to show them the problem..
I was told that the that the saab diagnostic kit doesn't seem able to log mis fires! or the ECU does log the problem.

are you using 95 or super unleaded?

Edit : just seen your profile, did the misfire occur before or after the hirsch upgrade? i think its the extra boost causing the premature aging of the plugs.

Cheers

sounds like my dealer.. I had to practically tell them what needed replacing..

good cars let done by small issues.

Another thing you could try is to regap the plugs to 0.8 mm. alot of people are doing this over in the VXR forums.
if you need to know what the new plug codes are just let me know, i'll dig them out

cheers

Hi, just had 300hp/430Nm Hirsch performance upgrade installed in my MY09 9-3 V6 XWD last Thursday and guess what happened ;-) - the car shudders big time at full throttle. It gets worse on 99 octane V-power from Shell. Have sent a msg to Hirsch and they confirmed it could be an ignition problem: "Some cars with this engine type have a production problem with the ignition coils, which can lead to misfiring at full throttle."
Is this only spark plugs or the problem is more serious?? I'm going to see my local dealer in Warsaw today but I don't trust them as this seems totally new to them....

my searching revealed that the coil packs on the turboX and AWD models are slightly different to the older FWD 2.8 V6 models. not sure how true that is though.

the dealers aren't familiar with the 2.8 engine as they don't get many in so they find it difficult to solve problems and even SAAB technical don't seem to have much feed back data on the engine either.

good luck in getting it sorted.

thanks!

spent 2 hrs @ my dealership. they tested the car extensively, had two drives and their conclusion was..... faulty software from Hirsch (!) so now i'm back on original factory software and dealer said they would ask Hirsch to fix the software....

they'd better do it cause this engine will go to the new 9-5 and is already sold in Insignia in 260hp and 325hp versions.

i've got a hunch i'll end up with original soft, and factory hardware WITH MY MONEY BACK OF COURSE.

i think the problem is the poor batch of coils that have been fitted to the later cars. new coils will fix the problem.. but that of course depends on if dealer will fit them under warranty.

quick update. the car was still shuddering at WOT, even on factory software (but upgraded I/C and air intake). yesterday the dealer uploaded a new "revised" software from Hirsch which was supposedly going to fix the problem and.... it's still misfiring, maybe a bit less. I've visited the dealership 3 times last week and am getting seriously p*ssed off now. looks like a common Aero V6 problem from other saab forums - esp. after tuning/upgrades. These engines seem to have some ignition coil problems...

Did the dealership fit a completely new set of coils + plugs?

that won't fix the problem. imho it needs a complete set of coils. non modified turbox and AWD are suffering from the problem.

its been in to the dealer and new plugs fitted and this has helped but the hesitation is still there
they have admitted that there is a problem with coil pack and have agreed to fit a new set ..

Waiting for them to come in now (as well as the expansion tank) back order ..grrrrrrr
and the expansion tank is leaking now ....double grrrrrrr

make sure they route the pipes going into the coolant tank the revised way otherwise coolant will leak from the joints. let us know how you get on with the new coils.
