Hello, Im considering a 3-5yr old petrol Saab 93. Which engines are the 4-cylinder models?

Ive been advised to avoid these if possible.
Not sure what you are asking by which engines are the 4 cyl models..?

There is only one 4 cyl petrol engine, although it comes in several versions, and that just leaves the V6 petrol which you might just encounter at 3 years old, and the 1.9 diesel or older 2.2 diesel in the very early versions, which again you might just encounter at 5 years old.
So, if you don't want the 4 cyl petrol, that only leaves you with the 1.9TiD.

Curious to know why you've been advised to avoid the 4 cyl petrol engines, as it's the best all round option IMHO confused

The standard engines are all turbos so using a fully synthetic oil and regular changes is a good plan. I think that at one point saab used semi-synth in all but the hot aeros. There were some issues with that and some people had problems with sludge. I would only ever use fully synthetic in a turbo.

Honestjohn says the 4 cylinder needs oil changes every 5k?
More like ‘dishonestjohn’ when it comes to accuracy of info about Saab’s. rolleyes
I don’t think there’s much even vaguely accurate about Saab on that website.

When the ‘new’ 9-3 came out in 2003, there was much made of an on-board algorithm that adjust the oil change interval to the driving style......however....

5k miles is a worst case change on the earlier versions of the lower power engines when using a mineral oil.

The higher power engines (2.0HOT and maybe 2.0t) had longer life full synthetic oil specified so had a longer oil change interval.

I think from 2006 the service interval was extended out to 10k miles/12 months because of a newer higher grade synth oil spec being specified. I would use full syth by default anyway on any Saab turbo engine, regardless.

Best to go to one of the Saab forums and ask for a more spot on accurate answer from 9-3 owners.

And how often should a Subaru engine have it's oil changed?

So that's every 3750miles if driven hard or every 7500miles if normal driving. Granted we are talking the WRX but it's more a turbo thing, isn't it? Keeps the turbo's oil seals performing longer.
