My SAAB 93 sportwaggen 06, is currently having problems getting into 2nd gear. Its not impossible just crunches most of the time and is very stiff compared to every other gear. Some days its worse than others and just recently we have notice a mechanical whine comming from somewhere. Its only noticeable at low revs but could be there at high revs as road noise may drown it out.
Could this be a faulty gearbox? Or something else?

Its going into SAAB for an inspection but I dont wan them to fob me off if there is a real problem as the warrenty runs out in August.

Many thanks
Pete

Why would you assume you are going to get "fobbed off", what people dont seem to understand is that dealerships only get paid when they find something wrong with your car and fix it, so would prefer that there is an issue otherwise the time they spend on the car is not recovered.

Most likely cause of your issue is going to be either a stiff gear change unit, or stiff linkage. both of which are fairly easy to replace.

Dont the dealerships get a lower fee for waranty work compared to retail. They may think that I will be back in 6 months when its not covered!

Saab pay their dealers their retail labour rate minus 10% for warranty work, this is higher than the average invoiced hourly rate to fleet company's, and as most dealers discount their labour rate on vehicles outside warranty more than this to attract the business and discourage people from using the "specialists" it is often more profitable to work on a car when it is still under warranty.

If a dealer tells you you don't have a problem it will be either because a) you don't, or b) that they were unable to detect or diagnose the problem, never because they want you back in six months for a retail repair.

The gearbox in a 1.9tid is a hard gear box anyway. i do get people complain about it and when i take the car out it is fine. i drive them every day so i have got use to driving them. They don't really have a problem with the gear box tho. Sometimes the selector housing can get stiff and makes it stiff going left to right on the gear stick. Or you might need your gears re aligned with the linkage. Hope that helps

Hi, No the problem has never been sorted. So far they have changed the gear oil and replaced the turret. The problem comes and goes though so I have decided just to live with it.
