... is fitted to a 9-3 2.0t? A friend's has just blown up in a big way. What other cars/engines use the same turbo?

ETA: It's a 2001 car.

Garrett GT1752.

Only the Saab 9-5 2.0t or 2.3t uses the same turbo.

Try to convince them to upgrade to a TD04HL15T from a 9-3 Aero or 9-5 Aero. wink He'll need to get a Trionic remap to get anything out of it performancewise, but at least the Mitsu is more reliable than the ickle wee Garrett GT17.

So apparently there is a recall, or something similar, for a problem where the heat generated by the turbo causes the oil in the sump to emulsify over time. The recall being basically to change the service schedule from 12k miles to 6k and fix any bits that are broken. Given that it's been puffing a bit of blue smoke on the overrun for a while, I wonder if it's new engine time...

Well, at the very least I'd check whether all the updates on the PCV system (ther were several) have been performed... if the engine is toast because of the sludge issue, the car may be just outside the (retrospectively launched as part of the recall) eight year warranty on T7 engines, anyway (and if one were to call upon the warranty, the service history of the particular car will be gone over with a fine tooth comb).

However it's pretty likely just the turbo having given up as its the GT17... more or less a case of TADTS...
