Just hit 50,000 miles in my 93 Aero convertible and suddenly got a horrible graunching noise from the front offside - thought it might be a wheel bearing but the dealer tells me it's a snapped road spring that has eaten its way into the side wall of the tyre as well (bugger! new tyre two weeks ago).

Anyone else experienced similar? It sounded from the dealer that this is not uncommon - if that's the case shouldn't somethinglike this be a recall matter - fortunately it happened to me almost at home and less than half a mile from the local dealer. Dread to think what might have happened if it had snapped at high speed on the motorway.

Typically I'm just out of warranty as well!

Happy motoring!

Hi Neville

My mum experienced this but only found out what had happened when it failed its MOT. She has an 05 plate 93 convertible with hirsch upgrade. Think it cost about £300 quid in the end for 2 springs and fitting. There are a lot of people on Saab forums who have had this, some have been successful in claiming from Saab but many havent. I agree that it should be a recall as she noticed a grinding noise about 4-5 months back but then it stopped and only ocasionally came back when going round right hand bends. She has only done about 54K.

welcome to the club

they all do that !!

My '04 9-3 ss vert with 50 k had two !!

I heard one going and when it was in the tech found the other one had gone too
luckily both had gone in the first 1/4 of the coil so no harm done but I have heard of ones digging into the tyre and causing lots of problems

seems to be a cheap GM supplier

Are you saying that your mum had Hirsch springs fitted as a result of the standard ones breaking, or was it the Hirsch springs that failed?

I have often read of reports of failed springs, but felt quite smug as I have an 05 Aero rag top, but fitted with Hirsch springs all round, thinking it was all the standard springs that keep breaking?

Your confirmation would be appreciated.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the various replies. After discussion with my local dealer, Saab have agreed to fully fund the cost of replacement front springs and a new tyre - so that's a reasonable outcome I suppose.

In answer to John's question, my car is an 2005 Aero convertible with a Hirsch upgrade so I don't think you can assume it's only the standard springs that are a problem.

Cheers all,
Neville

I had exactly the same happen to me 2 weeks ago resulting in 2 new springs and a new tyre, which was even more annoying as I had only just put 2 new tyres on the front the previous week...

You did well to get SAAB to cough up, the useless shower that supplied my car from new and serviced it all of its life couldn't be less interested in helping if they tried, I also spoke to SAAB customer services resulting in a similar outcome.
