Read a few posts on this but would appreciate anyones opinions.

Just picked up a 2006/7 9-3 Aero conv with 18k and first service just done at a main Saab dealer. I noticed that on start up from cold and for about 1/2 a miles it was chuffing out blue smoke, then it clears. After reading a few posts, this morning i let it run for 30 seconds before pressing the accelerator and no blue smoke. Is this a one off or should i be concerned that the Turbo has been neglected at some point and needs a main dealer to look at it, the car still has manufacturers warranty until Nov 09.

Are Saab likely to replace an injured turbo foc, how good are their warranty payouts?

On a positive note i love the car, best seats i've ever sat in and a very smooth drive, wish i'd opted out earlier.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

If it is under warranty then get it to your local dealer to be checked out, if it needs a new turbo they will fit one.

Yes, get it to the dealer for checking out before the warrenty expires, you shoud get a new turbo without a problem.
Damn rare though for one to go at that age/mileage though, as the Aero's use the Mitsi TD04's which are pretty robust units.

For a turbo to have gone that quickly it would imply severe neglect - starting up and driving hard straight off and turning off when hot without letting the engine idle?

As this in my own car now (not a company, drive it like you stole it), it's warmed up in the morning before i set off, I change up at 2500 rpm for the first 30 mins and leave it a minute or so before switching off when i get home.

Car is going into the dealer tomorrow, hopefully it's nothing too serious.

2500rpm for first 30 mins.....eek

That's on the side of over-cautious.

5 or so mins even in current low temps is sufficent for mine to be good to go, so to speak.

The warm-down is only really neccessary if stopping immediately after a v.hard run when the turbo could be glowing red hot, otherwise just switch it off.

As it's my own car now i'm just a bit careful seeing as it's nice and new ,you should have seen what i was like with my Evo 2 Integrale.

My journey in the morning involves dropping the kids off at nursery so I can't enjoy it as i'm mowing my way through the traffic.

I took the car into the dealer on thursday who knew what it was straight away. If it's a Aero when the weather is really cold the car riches up the fuel mixture on start up hence the blue smoke. Also he said it's made worse as the moisture that sits in the twin cats releases itself into the cold air, so nothing to worry about and all is fine. They even cleaned up all the wheel centres as the graphite from the brake pads had turned them black, well done
lewis Saab, will definately go back when the next service is due.

Now about that power upgrade.....
