Need a car for a daily 80 mile round trip and seems i can get a 2 year old facelift 9-3 diesel for my budget (c. £10,000). I like the look of a vector 1.9tdi or the 1.8t vert but I'm told reliability is an issue. If it were your money..?

you should buy the car that makes sense to you and makes you happy

think of it this way - are you buying the car for you or other people?

IF it were my money, and I currently have a 9-5 Aero, I'd get a BMW E39!

Difficult....

I've been a Saab owner for a long time, but I'm not sure about the 9-3. I have long legs and find the lack of under thigh support lacking in the saloons and estates, but OK in the vert with their slightly better seats.

I've driven both a 1.9Tid estate and a 1.8t vert and both have their merits. The face lift cars are a bit better built than the earlier ones, but I'm not a big fan of the 9-3 interior's TBH.
The vert would have better residuals for future sale, especially if it has a few options.

The alternatives will be older, and higher miles but likely better TBH.

Saab makes pretty average cars these days, but with prices in freefall some bargains to be had, lot of car for the money...

if it were my money I would get a 9-5 not a 9-3 - I have spent that kind of money on both for daily work use but feel the 9-5 was a lot more car for the money... the 9-3 is sportier and prettier but the 9-5 is a better everyday car imo and I have used both (an 03 9-3 sport saloon and an 54 9-5 saloon) - I have not had a facelift version of either car tho so can't comment on that.

the 9-3 was not unreliable tho, I had no problems with it at all wink

I prefer the 9-5 over the 9-3.

My dad traded his 9-5 in for a 9-3 aero - but was never as happy with it. He loves our 9-5... but traded the 9-3 in for a Lexus.

For £8k it seems the 9-3 will give me what i need - cheap, reliable commuting in reasonable comfort. Having looked about 1.9TiD sport is the target (56 plate, facelift). One question though - cars I've seen seem to differ in their badging -some have the word 'Sport' under the 1.9TiD legend, others (declared in the dealer's blurb as a sport model)don't. Anyone know why? Should a Sport model delcare this on its tail?

What about (and bare with me a little here)....

A Cadillac??

I also wanted something like a 9-3 1.9 TiD and was looking at spending circa £10k, but have just purchased a Cadillac BLS 1.9d Luxury auto for £6,300.

With 33k on the clock, 1 previous owner and more toys than I've ever had before it'ss brilliant!

You should have added that the BLS is actually a "Caddied" Saab 9-3 Sportwagon!

Yeah, for that sort of money it'd be rude not to... thumbup If GM allows their 'premium' brands to compete with each other in this way with near-idential cars running from the same line and a perpetual desire to shift Caddies to a market that doesn't know what to think or expect from them, you, the consumer can't be blamed to sod brand loyalty and take maximum advantage of the situation, especially in the current sales climate... smile

Had a look and you're right in say you get a lot of metal for your cash. However, didn't see anything listed anywhere near your price of £6,300 on A.T. Was it a private sale?

i do a 80ish mile round trip each day in my 9-3. In the 5K i've done since owning the car i'm quite happy with it. seems like it can take big miles with out to much trouble.

its comfortable, good driving position and easy to use. the only problem imho is the interior quality other than that the 9-3 is a fantastic car for the money.

Apologies for the delay in responding, it was a dealer sale, Stratstone Cadillac birmingham. It's back there now though for the 3rd time, twice for noisey front suspension, and now the engine management light is on, but they're checking the suspension again as they've not managed to fix it yet...

It's a truly great car though...
