9-5 Aero Wagon Required
Discussion
Hi folks,
The lack of a good motorway car is doing my head in and with plans to get a dog in the new year hopefully I think an estate is the way forward. A 9-5 Aero Estate is top of my list so that's what i'm after.
Requirements:
2003/04 9-5 Aero (250bhp)
Sensible mileage
Estate
Not too concerned about manual / auto
Must have decent spec (i'd hope all Aero's of this age do).
Black / Dark Grey preferably.
If you know of any nice ones up for sale please point me at them.
Cheers,
Chris

As mentioned in another thread, this one looks up your street, if you don't mind a manual.
Looks like it's got the sort-after Aero Lux pack, although it doesn't say so. Give away signs are the rain sensor wipers and folding door mirrors.....
BUT.....
There are one or two about that have almost all the options of the Lux Pack but not quite.
That ads says it's got electric dirvers seat, but if it's a Lux Pack equipped car it should have electric passenger seat as well, with memory function on the drivers.
Lux Pack also included the Harmon-Kardon AS3 audio upgrade as well, which can be detected by the sub-woofer speaker in the right hand rear side of the cargo compartment.

Hello - Mine is up for sale again, as the guy who 'bought' it started to mess me around with price and I just gave up. So, its back on PH in the Saab 9-5 classified. Not sure if I am allowed to post link in forum, but here it is - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/796605.htm [mod - please remove if not allowed in post].
I'm only selling as got a TVR lined up. I would keep it if I could afford both.
Even if you are not interested in mine, I can highly recommend them.

Motorway car...are you sure an Aero is what you want?
I've done two 700 mile M4 round trips in the last 10 days in my Aero. You'll notice from my profile that I've also got a Volvo V70 D5.
I love the Aero but the Volvo is more comfortable. Seats are a bit better and ride over bumpy UK motorways is a lot less wearing. -My Aero bumps and thrums over the blocky M25 surface, especially when loaded up. The Volvo is a more calming environment.
The Aero's torque and power means that you are constantly adjusting your speed down from its happy and natural 90-95 lepton cruising speed. (I would imagine. Officer.) A spirited prod of the gas can get you up to instant ban speeds worryingly easily. Not a bad thing per se but soldierly self restraint can be required.
The Volvo does 48-50mpg. The Aero does 35mpg if you somehow stick to 70mph.
The Aero's steering wheel audio controls don't light up at night unlike the Volvo's. A minor point but an irritating one recently.
I'm not saying you should buy a diesel Volvo. The Saab excels when you get off the motorway but its a bit performance focused for regular motorway mileage in my opinion.

Useful reply thanks! It will do a lot of motorway miles and I appreciate the Volvo may be a bit better at that but it will still be a hell of a lot better than the Peugeot 307 we currently use for distance (12-15 mpg gets a bit tiresome in the Rangie)! Allied to this is the fact i've just got to have some performance, well a lot of performance actually. I'm sure it's some woeful inadequacy on my part but i like driving something on the motorway at say 5/10ths of its capability (80mph out of 160mph possible for example) as it gives lots of opportunity for grabbing a chunk of overtakes from the rare 3 lane bits on the A1, the odd squirt when the road clears and just generally stops me being a grumpy bugger.
Anyway, for years I only had one car and that was always a sports car so given my motorway schleps were done in a 911 GT3 for some time, I think the Saab will seem like luxury!

In many ways I'm splitting hairs here. The Aero is still a comfy and planted big saloon. If I was to drive 300 miles in the Volvo now I'd miss the instant 70-90mph 3rd gear urge of the Aero. My Aero's heated/cooled seats are great, if not up to Volvo levels of 'nestling-in' comfyness. Allied to this is the fact i've just got to have some performance, well a lot of performance actually. I also agree with the point of taking comfort from having 'engineering' in reserve. A couple of days ago I noted how well a Ford Ka can go as I overtook it, but thought how close it was to the limits of its engineering and how I was barely scratching the surface of the Saab's capacity.
I agree you wouldn't be disappointed by the Aero on the motorway. Its just that there are probably technically better motorway cars.
The aero is PERFECT for the motorway.... every Sunday hooning from Sidcup (J3) to Redhill (J8) with the mountainbike in the back there's NOTHING better.
The midrange urge is proper kick in the back and sport mode REALLY makes a difference in the urgency :-)
Controls are very well laid out, the seats are more comfy than the 850R I had before and the whole car "feels" better.
and that's coming from someone with a reliable early one :-)
I'm only selling it as I've just bought an M6 :-)
