I think i might have a problem (i hope not), this afternoon i noticed some paint bubbling just underneath the rear number plate. upon further investigation the rear number plate lights where they meet the metal work have signs of very faint bubbling as well. i have been underneath the car and checked the floor plan, ripped out the spare wheel and check the interior of the boot etc, no signs of over spray or accident damage. HPI check comes back clear (is it accurate?!) tomorrow i will phone the last saab dealership to have serviced the car to make sure it hasn't been in for body work repair. since i got the car from a saab dealer ship i don't think i have a problem and i'm sure they will sort it all out if its just regular rust. i'm alittle concerned that its more than inside out rust and where the car has been repaired..

The question i need answering is if the 9-3 sportwagon is known for tailgate rust..

any help would be great

Not at all.

There's a (IIRC) eight year anti-corrosion warrenty on Saab's, so get the dealer to sort it.

Don't know about the 9-3s, but the 9-5 are prone to rust in exactly the same spot.

just been to my local dealer who thinks the rear tail gate has been resprayed. not sure i agree with him, but he did think that the paint bubbles should have been picked up during inspection..

car goes in on friday to be looked at by a Saab customer relations chap. But interesting to note that the head of body work did say that he has seen a couple before that had some bubbling on the tail gate. very rare though.

update :

the car is being booked in for the work to be done to sort out the bubbling. but on a further note, it has already been in once to sort out some rattles and creaks. not impressed with the build quality of the 9-3 especially the rear tailgate interior trim, it rattles badly, they have tried to fix it and done a good job in that it rattles less.. the door window frames still vibrate as does the door trim. they wasn't able to fix the rattle from the gearbox area which i fixed my self with silicon spray and sticky felt.(rattling belt socket)
today i've noticed the SID and climate control displays are flickering..

i'm not impressed. good car with nice engine and drive train shame about the build quality

Indeed....sadly the dimishing quality of interior parts and trim is a direct result of GM ownership tying Saab's hands IMHO. I've noticed this gradual decline over the past 15 years of Saab ownership.
I did feel the latest shape current 9-3 seemed to be a little bit better when I drove a 57 plate car a few months back, but I think it's still someway short of what it should be.

hi

I actually had a 08plate vector 1.9 150bhp auto (700miles on the clock) as the hire car whilst mine was away getting seen to. it seemed better built but after 500miles the some familiar rattles started to appear! LOL!

a real shame saab can't get on top of the problems.
Can you shed any light on the dimming of the SID/climate control displays?

On a 9-5, there is a light sensor on the SID that automatically controls the brightness, you haven't got a phone/drink/pair of knickers hanging from the mirror or near it have you?

everything is sorted and fixed. alittle peed that so many little things needed sorting on what is a very young car.

rattles are the biggest pain but this weekend i'm going to sort them out my self using some felt and foam..

cars runs well though.
