I'd stick with 17"
Saw a great 9-3 today. Black with black wheels.

IMHO stick with Saab wheels - Saabs never look good with aftermarket wheels IMHO.

Only exception were the Azev-As that were fitted on some cars, my dad had an early facelift 9000 2.3T in Scarab green with 16" Azev-As and it looked great!

(not his but very similar)

My favourite 5-stud Saab wheels are the double Y-spokes, but only in 17" which I'm not so sure are great on the 9-3, ride/handling wise...

Have a look through some of the saab forums (especially non-UK based ones) for pics of 9-3SS with aftermarket wheels.
However, I'd say if you go this route, don't go for a style wheel which are usually cheap and heavy, stick to the good motorsport lightweight wheels to reduce unsprung weight (BBS, Speedline etc.,etc)....or just stick with the Saab ones.

Saan wheels are made by Ronal iirc, so they are decent.

There are endless pictures of 9-3s with aftermarket wheels on this (very long) thread:
