Which engine? 1.9 or 2.2?

the 1.9 was the good one and the 2.2 had some issues so i belive, im not too clued up on the Tids though, not the most appealing of Saabs to me, but at that price you cant really go wrong.

...and will be the original 2.2 with 110-115bhp, not the later one with 125.

Therefore perhaps less troublesome too.

The later 1.9s were 130-150 or so, but the early ones were poo by comparsion. But remember at the time the equivalent VAG diesel was available as 90 or 110, and the Peu/Cit diesel was 89....

i think the only diesel Saab i could live with would be the 3 litre TID, i prefer Saabs for thier FPT petrol engines myself biggrin

I just Part EX'd my 125k mile 2000 2.2 TiD.

The 2.2 engine is a bit agricultural with excessive vibration (Black cab like) at idle, but gave me no major issue's for 65K miles, just a couple of engine warning lights which turned out to be the boost solenoid and injector seals which was quite cheap to sort out.

Performance is not as bad as 115bhp suggests, it was much quicker than the 100ps Focus TDci i had before it, MPG around 38-40 on normal driving, 45-50mpg possible if driven like a granny on the motorway.

They are not cheap to fix when they do break and at 170k+ things might be on the verge of worn out, but for £600 quid its a lot of car, i would certainly have another, it never let me down in 3 years of hard use.

HI,
funnily enough i have a 172k year 2000 Saab 9-3 2.2TID as a daily driver. It owes me £500 and has a faulty EGR valve at the moment but aside from that i cant really fault it.

The interior shows no signs of the age or millage, air con an all the electrics work fine, its actually quite pleasant to be in.

The drive, dont get me wrong it is incredibly dull but if you try hard enough you can fling it around - i think Saab re engineer the chassis an suspension and compared to the Vectras of similar age ive been in the saab is a LOT more solid and marginally more sporty. I upgraded my front shocks to the turbo spec ones and they made a hell of a difference. Note GSF/Euro car parts really help keep running costs down. Saab dealer wanted £500 for front suspension , GSF - Sachs Turbo kit cost me £80.

I concur with the above poster when the engine is healthy it returns a good 45-50mpg even hammering it around it wont drop below 38.

for what its worth if you can haggle on the 600 then id say go for it. Ive had mine a year now and its been largely good as gold, for the money any car you buy for 600 will need a bit of work doing to it so if it looks/drives ok an has MOT + Tax why the hell not.

I have had a 'W' plate 9-3 TiD, for the last 5 years/60K miles. The common problems (that I have had) air flow meter (£150 part!) perished fuel lines (£50 at an indie).
The interior is great, the boot is huge, and even with mainly town driving (by a heavy footed wife) it does 38mpg. Had it up to 53 in France on a long run.
For £600 I think it is worth a punt. You could strip it for parts, and get that back.

Happy to answer any specific questions
