can you pick up a decent 9.5 with leather seats for under 2 grand? i know about 98 sump faults but if i got a 1998 model and got sump changed it would be ok? Whats it like to drive compared to 9-3 and volvo s60? preferably i want a turbo are the servicing costs and faults the same as 9´3? i have good relationship with an indie in birmingham but dont know a lot about 9´5 models. my 900 needed a lot of services and the 9´3 turbo blew when i bought it, what do people think in here of 9ß5, car would be also used for european trips

The sludge issue wasn't fully rectified til 2004 model year.
So any purchase will require a fairly simple sump drop to check the pick up, and clean as required.
Plenty of absolute bargains out there for very little money, all 9-5's were turbo'd.

I got a 2001 9-5 SE estate (185bhp) auto with full goodies, one owner, full saab service history and all stamps (history shows a new turbo at 80K miles) with 130K on it for £2100

I don't reckon that my 2000 9-5 2.3LPT SE Auto Estate is even worth £1K let aone £2K. It does have nearly 190k miles on it! That combined with a badly stone chipped bonnet, missing front fog lamp, small dent under rear light and other parking dents makes me think I'd be lucky to get a grand for it.

There are loads out there for 2K especially saloons

Due to planned VED changes and petrol price hikes, there are a lot of bargain big cars out there. Used Saabs depreciate heavily, so this makes the 9-5 excellent value at the moment. Get a pre March 2001 model (I think), and it will be around £200 a year VED not £400. Repairs are expensive, but no more so than BMW ect.

We are soon to part-ex a 2001 estate with 130k, FSH, but a bit rough, for £1400 - there will be lots of bargains in the winter with people down-sizing cars. They are very nice cars to drive, really comfy, but can shift a bit too.

This evening I became a 9-5 owner!

Mot runs out next month, but it might well pass with no work needed.

The best part is, i 'inherited' it from my dad! He has replaced it with....a 2.0 Laguna!!!

A freebie 1999 Griffin!

Best kind of bargain - a free one. If he hasn't had it long and you are not sure of the history, I would have the sump dropped and cleaned at a specialist saab independant garage. If you look after them, they can do mileage of 200k plus. As with most big prestige cars, there comes a point when it needs a service and work which costs a lot more than the car is worth. Until then, enjoy what should be a great car.

Cheers smile

He has had it for about six years and it has been pretty well looked after, but he takes no notice as to what has actually been done so i need to speak to his mechanic really.

Sounds like it will need an ABS unit too, but not for an MOT presumably?

Early 9-5's are prone to build up of sludge in the sump. You can get it dropped and cleaned for around £150. I believe Saab have been willing to pay for repairs on 9-5's that have developed problems due to this.

Being a griffin, it'll be the loverly V6, so is unlikely to suffer same fate as the 4 pots due to better design.

I am safe from the sludge problem? Cool!

The car drives like a dream. Yesterday I had a little play with my mate in his S4, on the Milton Keynes D/Cs. He was surprised too, but not so much on the roundabouts...Squeal Piggy!!

for £150 you will be able to sleep better at nights, well worth the cost a sump drop
