I'm off on holiday next week, taking the car through the tunnel and driving through France, Italy and Spain.

It's a MY02 9-5 Aero, and I'd like to know about adjusting the headlights for driving abroad. Being Xenon it's not just a case of applying deflectors for driving on the right. Is this something I can do myself ?

Advice please...

By the way, it's my first Saab and I've only had it a week or so. Now I know what all the fuss is about.

I believe there is something that can be done by a dealer, but others owners that go abroad with their cars regulary don't bother doing anything and haven't had a problem, something to do with the xenon 'spread' being different to 'normal' headlights...????

GavGav, replied to you in General Gassing, but i've just been thinking, are you sure you can't use the deflectors? When i went to France last year in our xenon equipped Mini Cooper S, i rang the mini garage to find out what to do, and they said there was no way to change the beam other than stick the deflectors on, but they didn't sell them. I ended up buying some universal ones from Halfords for £7, and didn't get stopped when driving in France.

My old Audi TT had a switch to adjust the xenon beams, on the back of the light, and AFAIK Land Rovers etc have such a switch too. Also, my new MY08 Saab 93 has a switch on the back of the halogen headlights to alter the beam pattern between left-hand drive and right hand drive (accessed by twisting off a plastic panel).

Have you looked in the owners manual? There's a page devoted to switching the beams in the 93 manual, i should think there'll be a similar thing in the manual for the 95.

Thanks Paul - replied in general gassing too...

9-5 Owner's manual says it's a main dealer job, no switches or levers that I could find. So went for the Halfords deflectors, see how that goes. Don't intend driving much in the dark if I can get away with it.

A word or 3 on the 9-5 for those considering one. Bought mine 3 weeks ago - a 2002 Aero, the 250bhp / 5-speed Auto version. I can't recommend it enough. I've had some reasonable motors before, this is by far the most comfortable car I've ever had and it's just such a nice place to be. You do have to watch the speedo as there's no "kick in the kidneys" but when you floor it and expect it to go 40-50-60-70 it actually goes 40-58-75-98. Just done Bristol to Folkestone, then Calais to Nancy, a total of 520'ish miles at about 33mpg. And that was averaging about 90. Km/h, obviously. Only people that love it more than me are my passengers. Not even dreading tomorrow's 700 mile leg to Rome.

Am so glad I passed up spending £3k more on the "equivalent" Beemer or Merc.
