Guys I have a fairly bad oil leak around the timing chain cover, engine is in a 98 9-5 and unfortunately I can't get at the leak other then when underneath I can see it is leaking from the timing chain cover.

Anyways question is, is there an easy way to fix the leak or is it an engine out job i.e. can the seal be renewed replaced with the engine in situ.

Hi the head bolts might need to be re-tightened. If the car has not had regular service, get one done and the the head bolts undone and retigheted to the correct torque.

the bolts stretch over time, causing the leak, you should find it in the service book.

Cheers, sounds good. The car has FSH at main dealer but is 145K miles now.

I have the tools to retorque head bolts myself.

Rather than loosening the bolts and going through the three stage process, it is better to tweak them all to the max setting which if you follow the process arrives at about 90 foot/pound.

You need an E16 socket.

Is the leak from the head or the timing chain cover?

Timing chain cover, tbh it was Weston Moore who spotted it and he is such a straigt up bloke that I suspect he would have tweaked the head bolts if it looked like they need it. The leak is very slight in that I don't need to top up between services but it results in RH wishbone and rack gaitor beeing covered in oil gunge.
