Oh dear..... Was driving the Saab yesterday and a loud rattle had started to come from the engine. Quickly the rattle progressed into a loud whining noise and got louder and louder.

Decided today too see where the noise was coming from, as immediately I thought worse case scenario, that the cam chains were going...so was prepared for the worst.

Decided to test the engine, with the aux belt off. So I removed the air box, jacked up the car, removed the never ending plastic covers, got the drivers road wheel off, and slackened the tensioner to remove the belt.

Belt came off with a little bit of wrestling, and scuffed knuckles..

Started up the car again....and wait for it...........nice and quiet....purring lovely....

so that was a relief, the problem is on the aux belt pulleys etc.... so I put it all back together and now the noise (as expected) is back.

I also decided to clean up the whole area with my steam cleaner, and remove the two pulleys for further inspection. One of the bearings is very crunchy sounding, and the other is loose on the bearing, so I’m 90% sure these are the culprits. Although I may renew the tensioner pulley also; as preventative maintenance.

I need to order...

Belt tensioner pulley (not the tensioner but just the pulley)

Two idler pulleys and the serpentine belt.

Any idea on where to get them?
