knocking noise underneath when i change gear
Discussion
Hi, I noticed this today. WHen i change into second gear i notice a loud knocking noise coming from underneath the car, and if i dont use the exact revs the car shudders a bit and the same for reverse, could it be the gear mount or something more? the clutch seems to be working fine.

Hi mate,Does the clunking happen when you change gear? or does it happen when the engine is under load?
mashead, just when i change gear, and only when i change into reverse, or 2nd gear, today it wasnt so bad as i was gentle with the gearchanges, but i did have to reverse and i hear this clunking noise coming from underneath the car..i have no idea what it is, the car still runs smoothly

Sounds like a worn gear linkage. If its 2nd and reverse.Let me think....the linkage would probably have to move to the far left and far right with the linkage body tilting into the gearbox for those two gears (pushing the gear rod in).
1st 3rd and 5th the body would be tilting away from the gearbox (pulling the gear rod out), so if you have not got noise on 1st 3rd and 5th, and 4th gear no noise. Then the bearings that tilt the linkage body far left and right may be worn out of tolerance. When the linkage is tilted into the box the linkage is not under load as much as it tilting out. So no load on the mechanism, and worn bearings would give you the clunky noise you hear.
Have the gear linkage taken out an inspected against a new unit. It might be better to bit the bullet and just replace the whole linkage, as it is quite intricate.
yeah thanks mashhead although i am not good at mechanics, linkage sounds about right do you know if this is a costly repair?
and how is your car getting along after that service?
also i went to le mans and i have 3 nails in my tyres, is it safe to drive with them on and if i take the nail out would that mean the tyre go flat?
thanks

the tyres are hard and i am driving to and from work with them on as i only got the tyres replaced about 2000 miles ago at £130 a corner, but i noticed 3 of them have nails in,...should i fix them straightaway ? or is it ok to drive with nails in your tyres for a bit? the tyres dont seem to be worn and have no stretch marks where the nails are

As for my saab, its running like a dream. went to see some friends over the weekend, and they have a new-ish BMW D3 Alpina, the saab kept up very well, and even gained significantly on the BMW in 3rd from 55mph rolling start, but the BMW is a faster car so......it did eventually leave me behind approcahing 110. shhhhh!
lol........not for long....Abbott here i come lol
mine is 185 BHP
the BMW is 200 BHP
mine will be 220-ish BHP...eventually..
