Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I am looking to buy a Saab and I am strugling to decide between the two cars above (9-5 diesel 2.2l and diesel 3l V6). I have seen a few; yesterday I had a look at a lovely Vector that is just inside my budget...

Is the larger of the two engines going to have a significant difference in fuel economy over the smaller one? What kind of mpg can I expect from the two?

I would welcome comments from any Saab diesel owners to assist me in making a decision.

Many thanks!

Mark

I don't know much about the 3.0l diesel - I know the 2.2 is not as well thought of as the 1.9 however...

Hi

I have an 04 3.0 TiD estate, very please with the car, and it generally returns about 35.5 - 36 mpg (acording to SID) which is about 1 mpg less than gov figures. I also have a 9-3 Aero which acording to SID is returning 33.5 mpg (on high Oct fuel) 2 mpg higher than gov figures, so I assume the lack of mpg on the 9-5 is not all down to my right foot!

When I bought the 9-5, I was advised that the 2.2 was very under powered for the weight. Have had a 1.9 TiD loan car, and I really felt the engine was working much harder than my 3.0 TiD.

Hope this helps

3.0 TiD is definately the better performer of the two, as the 2.2 is a bit of an old tractor, in terms of performance and sound. MPG wise they are about the same, as the 2.2 has to work very hard to lug the 9-5 around.

However, the 3.0 TiD does have a very bad reputation for dropping it cylinder liners which wrecks the engine.....and they are very expensive to replace.

Personally, I'd just get a petrol 9-5, they arn't significantly more thirsty.

Or, if a diesel is a must, look elsewhere, it really is a lottery for getting a good 3.0TiD, and to a certain extent even then it's still a case of a time bomb with the cylinder liners.

I can only speak from experience, have done 94k from new, only expence other than service is 1 small water leak (small crack in a heater valve).

Car still drives like new.

I do agree, petrol is not a lot more expensive to run given the 3.0 Tid only does 36 mpg (ish) compared to 30 mpg (ish) from a petrol.

if the cylinder liners drop, common fault with low and hogh milers. a new engine from saab £6750, so that would put me off like aeropilot says look elsewhere no saab warranty with these engines now

Thank you for the replies and advice everybody.

I have been looking at a 3l diesel 9-5 that has done 93k miles, although I think now I would prefer a 2.2l diesel. I have always had diesels and am a bit nervous of petrol models (please don't ask me to explain - I can't properly!)

Essentially, I have about £7k to spend, and I want to get the safest thing I can for my young family. From what the general advice is about the 3l, it is a time bomb... ...I guess that is why they don't sell as quickly...

Any hints on the 9-5 2litre models or experiences of them would be very welcome indeed...

Thank you.

Aeropilot - do you mean look at other makes of diesel when you say 'look elsewhere' ??

I'm afraid so.....frown

Although, I'm a Saab fan, and I've had Saab's for over 10 years, and they've been 'in the family' at some point for even longer, the diesels that are in your price range are pants, frankly.
It wasn't until last year when the 9-5 got the 150hp 1.9Tid that things improved on the diesel front, and especially if that gets an ECU tweek.

The 9-5 is still a great family car, and very safe, and from the family point of view a perfect choice, if going for one of the petrol 9-5's.

If, as you say, you're a died in wool diesel man, I'd be looking in the direction of a Volvo D5 engined something, but not sure what you'd get for your budget though.

why dont you get a volvo D5- with 185bhp and 295lbt, mine has 87,000 miles trouble free miles, and 38.5mpg average fuel, i am sure if i had a more light right foot i could get that figure to 45mpg easy. i have 10 airbags, an amazing standard sound system and i am sure my car is faster than any saab diesel and could even give turbo models a run for their money

also they depreciate like hell.

Thanks K and aeropilot. I am going to have a look the Volvo. Apart from always having liked the look of Saabs, the reason I looked at the 95 was that it gets the highest NCAP rating.

Right - first of all a big thank you for your comments and replies. I have spent a day looking into the Volvo D5 selection.
My findings:

-The equivalent age and mileage Volvo D5 is on average £3000 more than the Saab 95

For my money I can get a 140000 to 160000mile D5, or a Saab 95 V6 3l diesel. I have managed to trace the history of a particluar Saab I have been looking at - main dealer service, etc... ...looks pretty reliable.

If I can get 37/37mpg out of the saab I would be happy. I hope this is a realistic figure for a conservative driver.

More questions, I'm afraid!

- Should I keep looking at for a Volvo?

- Is it worth getting a warranty for 3 years (approx £400) to cover the Saab against cylinder problems, etc?

if the volvo is out of your price range, and you have to go for the saab then get a warranty. also the volvo d5 has two engine options, i think a 140bhp diesel and the 185bhp, the 185bhp variety is definitely fast, people regularly are amazed when i tell them its a diesel as it has amazing mid range grunt, whereas i think the regular D5 has little power, whilst the 3.0 9-5 i think is more on par with the 185 variety, if you cannot stretch to the volvo, definitely get the warranty for hte 3.0d 9-5 IMO.

what year 9-5 are you looking at mark>

The 3.0TiD Saab is a great engine, when it's working, and is frugal for it's size, so should be able to achieve the mpg figures your after.

ABSOLUTELY DEFINATELY get a warrenty on the Saab, BUT, check in detail the small print to make sure you are covered for an engine failure.

Good luck.

definitely get a warranty then
my saab was ok up to about 97.000 miles , now it is 176,000 miles and amazingly its still working but i have had to replace every single item, it all started when it approached the 100k mark

good luck and if you get the 3.0td come to a ph meet and it would be interesting to compare my d5se with the 3.0
