My saab 93 2.0 lpt 2001 blows blue smoke out the back for a few seconds when started from cold. After being started no other smoke appears until the car has cooled and sat for a while. There is no smoke while the car is being driven.

any ideas to stop smoke would be good?

Well could be a number of things.

1st and most obvious is valve seats. They may be ok when warm, but when cold, they could be contracted and let in a very small amount of oil from the hydrualic lifter into the cylinder. Wear might not be the issue here, could be that the oil's viscosity is just slightly too thin, or they may be just starting to wear.

2nd piston rings.(most likely) The piston rings may be letting in a small amount of oil before they warm up and expand fully to create a seal. They will evenutally get worse and your engine will smoke all the time.

3rd clogged inlet hoses. Sometimes if you inlet is excessively clogged, excess oil can form inside the combustion chamber.

I would say check the turbo thrust bearings, but that's usually white smoke (as far as im aware)

Get the car on a compression test, and have the oil changed to slightly better oil. That may solve your immediate problem.
