Are you looking at an Aero manual or auto..?
Early 02 cars sometimes have a lower spec, as some of the nice toys were extra cost options for the first six months or so.
From about Mar 02, the UK spec Aero's got a free upradge package included consisting of the rear park sensors, electric front seats with 3-mem settings on the drivers + mirrors, heated front and rear seats, Xenon headlights...might have been something else as well, can't quite remember.
All this kit was carried over into the 03 year as well.
Mechanically, 02 and 03 cars are the same for manual trans, but different for the auto, as the 02 has a 'normal' 5-speed autobox, whereas the 03 has the Sentronic version with the manual flappy paddle change.
No serious mechanical things to worry about that you wouldn't check for or expect on any 4-5 year old car, but I'd think twice about any that doesn't have a full Saab service history.
At that age though, things that may cause a problem depending on mileage, could be the DI cartridge and crank position sensor on a higher mileage car.
Fuel economy for a manual is pretty good unless lots of urban commute travelling is undertaken, high 30's low 40's is certainley achievable, slightly less for an auto as expected.

Assumed you have checked out saabscene.com and uksaabs.co.uk as resources ?
I have an 03 Aero Automatic, with BSR ecu upgrade- running at around 275bhp/440NM torque.
MPG is very good for a large weighty saloon that is usually driving hard. Just returned from 1400 miles driving in France, week long average of 30.1 mpg, and thats with some very high speed cruising down empty autoroutes.
Normal mpg 26-27, light cruise up to 34.
High torque+high gearing= good mpg on long runs.
Can be as low as 20-22 on just town driving.

Thanks for that guys,
Much appreciated.
Thinking of an Aero and this one in particular. Seems a helluva lot of car for the money, especially in view of the mileage.
Not sure if its early or late 2002.

I have an 02 Auto (non flappy paddle) with 112k on the clock. Bought at 96k.
You can get a Saab (Network Q) warranty on the car through a dealer if it has less than 100k recorded. Mine had a seeping water pump which took a while to identify. By the time it became clear what it was the wty had expired but the dealer changed it at no charge anyway.
The Battery needed changing last year.
DI unit just changed under a recall by Saab.
Agree with the fuel consumption figs above - I've seen 33+ on a largely motorway/DC/Main road run in the middle of a heat wave with the aircon full on. I've also seen sub 20's with a stack of very short runs in autumn/winter and no decent journeys to improve the average.
Did a track day back in October and decided to leave the tyres set to high speed pressure for the (relatively) kart like handling!

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I think the car I was thinking of has sold now, but I will keep looking.
Didn't expect 'kart-like' handling to be part of the bargain
They do seem cracking value and so much more interesting that the standard German fare.

Tim - If you are still looking for an 9-5 Aero then email me via my profile. I'm thinking of selling mine to help fund my TVR addiction.
Thanks.

We have had our 9-5 estate hot aero for 3 years now (pre-registered) wifes car and have had no problems. Although only done 20k miles. All the elec bits, nice and fast, comfortable and reliable + can get roof box on and bike and baby stuff in the boot.
I enjoy driving it as does the wife.
Mid range is very nippy.

There is a lot of indepth FAQ on www.saabcentral.com. The biggest problem with the 9/5 is potential for sludging and then engine failure.
