9-5 computer display?
Discussion
Just been looking at an ad' for a '98 9-5 that appeals a bit to me, seems reasonably good but says that the computer display is not functioning correctly.
What exactly does the computer display, display on the 9-5?!
If it's just things like radio station, gear you are in and what the temperature outside is, I really don't care, but if it's got a more important role obviously I need to take that into account.
Cheers.

the computer display is the SID (Saab Information Display). google will tell you more.
they are shite on Saabs, and lose pixels when...well when they feel like it.
Its a 20cm by 5cm dot matrix display that shows radio info, trip computer stats (mpg, distance on fuel remaining, distance / time to destination etc), some engine error codes if the check engine light comes on (but you should tech-2 that anyway), clock, outside temperature...errr....
a new one is about £100-150 i think.

I believe there are two versions of the SID (1 and 2), the 2 has more functionality.
Recon units are available on eBay but it needs to me matched up to the ECU using a Saab Tech-2 device (main dealer or Saab indie)
There are some fixes for the dropped pixels on Saabscene and other saab forums, involves removing unit and straightening the ribbon cable out (carefully)
The SID is quite important as it provides diagnostic messages for the car (including engine management messages)
Pre-2001 SIDs are known to be dodgy, with Saab chaning supplier later in the production cycle.
I had mine replaced under warranty (when my car was about 4 years old), cost the warranty company about £215 at a main dealer
