How good is the Abbot Racing reflash? It seems quite expensive, but they seem to be the big name in Saab tuning too, so have a reputation.

I remember there being a Saab tuner who posts on these boards, does he offer a chiptune for hatchback FPT 9-3s?

Abbott's have a good enough reputation.
Expensive?.......actually I'd say they were very competitive compared with the prices of the Swedish tuners.

Cost is also relative to what version of the 9-3 you have, one with the Trionic 5 or a later Trionic 7 car...???

If it's a later T.7 car your choices are really restricted to Abbott's or either of the well known Swedish tuners such as Nordic, Maptun, SQR, Speedparts or BSR (all except SQR have UK outlets)

Big red 'thing' on top of engine = T5, big black thing = T7.

Trionic 5 fits;

Saab 9000
Saab GM900
Saab 9-3 - 1998-2000 (NOT for Aero/Viggen)

Trionic 7 fits;

Saab 9-3 - 2001-2003
Saab 9-3 Aero - 2000-2003
Saab 9-3 Viggen - 1999-2002
Saab 9-5 - all models

The red or black thing is the DI cassette. Normally start to give trouble at circa 70k miles apparently. Those years are MY, not reg year, as mine is a 2000 X plate, but is MY01 (Trionic 7).

Edited to add: You should have a T7.

For future reference - what are the symptoms of a DI cassette playing up?

I believe stuttering through the rev range, generally. Also, when they go, they just go. No start at all. AA now carry spares on board.

Often accompanied by an underbonnet distinct smell of 'fried' electrics.

Also, bewarned, ECU upgrades often promote failure of a weakening DI unit, so worth factoring in the cost of a replacement DI unit at the same time, unless you have already replaced it or you know it has been replaced within a reasonable time period beforehand.
