Potential 9-3 SS purchase
Discussion
After a very long and painful 3 years with the A4 (the arrival of which forced the selling of my 9-3 coupe...which did not go down well) it looks like a new 9-3 is on the cards. Unfortunately, policy dictates it's a diseasal so, a couple of questions:
The 1.9 TiD - is this a GM or a Saab engine? Any particular comments - noisey/quiet/thirsty, etc?
Vector Sport: I fancy the sports suspension upgrade (-10mm), anyone done this? Comments?
120hp v 150 hp - any real difference in day to day driving? I rather suspect there's very little.
Anyone had the VAG 1.9TDI and compared it back-to-back with the Saab 1.9 TiD?
Looking forward to getting back into a Saab, I know it's going to be a very difference beast to my old 9-3, here's hoping it is a nicer place to be than the A4.

My missus has had a 9-3 1.9TiD as courtsey/loan car while her W reg 9-3 lpt is in the the workshop.
She likes it so much that the dealer will have trouble getting it back off her. Her only criticisms are that first and second gear are no match for the lpt and that short journeys are no more fuel efficient than the petrol.
Go out and try one.

Will be trying one this weekend, but you cannot beat the opinions of those that have lived with a car for a period of time.
I miss the old 9-3 a lot, but part of its attraction was the turbine-smoothness of the petrol lump. Don't want those few test-drive minutes of diesel rattle to cloud my judgement...
Still, if you saw the list of alternatives, you'd wonder why I'm even asking the question!
Cheers

My understanding from my local dealer is that the latest 1.9 is the Alfa unit.
Chap across the road took delivery of one about 2 or 3 months ago. His first impression was that the engine seemed a little noisy which it did I must admit. Haven't had a chance to ask him how he is getting on with it for the last few weeks though the engine does sound quieter to me but I could be imagining that as I don't often hear it directly as he leaves the house.

Just been for a look-see, and had them fire up the demo car - noisey, but not A4 loud, and seemed to settle into a quieter idle.
Test drive booked for Saturday, so we'll have a better impression of the on-road noise.
Lovely old-shape 9-3 Aero convertible, in black, on the forecourt...if only

Just driven a Hirsch converted 1.9 TiD wagon...Wow, no on/off power delivery of your usual diesel turbo, just turbine-like pull all the way to the red line. Not an option for me, unfortunately, but anyone who thinks you cannot have a sporting diesel needs to drive this car! Fabulous. 175hp, but more torque than the 9-5 Aero.
And I think I have decided that the wagon is a better looking car than the saloon. No appreciable difference in road manners having tried them back-to-back, but with the bonus of all that space (the saloon's boot is big, but the aperture rather small).
So, black wagon with cream leather...?
