You need someone with the handheld diagnostic tool.
Plugs in under the steering column.
My guess (without knowing what the message is) that a sensor has gone, you'll have the choice of disabling that sensor or getting it replaced.
If disabling it'll take about 5 mins in total from mechanic opening the door.

or if it's like mine it will disappear next time you lock and unlock the car! It's happened numerous times with me but never stays on after relocking the car and not more than once a month... Easiest thing to do is when it happens, take it to the dealer and ask them to diagnose it (this will be free) then you can determine whether it warrants any expense or not depending on their answer.

The actual msg is SERVICE THEFT ALARM it seems to be coming up more regularly now and the Alarm seems to go off for no apparent reason at 9.30 most mornings. Thanks for the replies I will pop it into the dealers but since Grange shut about 2yrs ago I have yet to find a decent one in Essex.
Are you hitting the lock button more than twice in quick succession when you lock the car?
Mine seems to respond to numerous presses with this message, it seems that it's only expecting two presses, and getting too many confuses it. Seems to happen when leaving the car in the rain and cold where I just hit lock, lock, lock, as I'm running off from it until i hear it beep ;-)
Quite common, apparently, CH

I Havent had the msg for about a week or so now, but the alarm is still erratic eg got back from football training last night, parked up on front locked and alarmed no prob. Half an hour later it beeps a couple of times and stops before i can get to the keys. 5 mins later same again then all fine.
Its a mystery as to what its problem is but also annoying especially when i visit clients and its chirping away outside their house!
I still love it though even after 3yrs of ownership, I normally get bored quickly with cars and this is the longest I have ever had a private car. It must say something.

My old Omega developed a fault that meant the alarm would go off randomly - even when driving in the end.
The nth suggested diagnosis, after paying for various switches and things, was that the main control box thingy needed replacing. I replaced the Omega with the Aero as a better solution. I was fed up with misdiagnosis and having to disconect the battery all the time.
The Management's Xsara's alarm has a similar fault - goes off for no good reason randomly. She now leaves it unlocked all the time. Seems to solve the alarm problem for now, though leaving the Omega unlocked made no difference at all, it still alarmed when it felt like it.

not at my dealer, I have the "Check Theft Alarm" message and they want 30 GBP to access the code. Had the car a month so far had new DI cartridge and a new crank sensor ?.
the annoying thing is that when the car was at the dealers they told me that the battery needed charging and to disconnect one side of the battery when charging it. So I did this and as soon as I reconnect the battery I get the "Check Theft Alarm" code on the SID
