Saab parts availability (9-5 Aero)

Hi,

years ago I had a 9-5 Aero estate and then a 9-5 SE but that was before SAAB went bust.

I'm thinking about joining the fold again as a 9-5 Aero estate has me tempted, its a 55 plate with 88k mile for £3400 from a dealer. Before I take the plunge I wanted to find out what the situation was like with regards to spares? Are they still readily available, DI cartridges in particular spring to my mind fr0m the previous ownership experience

I assume the main thing to watch out for on the Aero is the oil sludging issue, so potentially getting the garage to drop and clean the sump may be a good idea?

The oil issue won't be a problem as your car is post 2003.

Hi, a 55 plate may be an early 'Dame Edna' or a late earlier model (my 55 plate is a late previous generation). Neither of these suffer the sludging problem, I believe this was a problem up to 2002. Well worth an oil change with Mobil 1 though. It does seem a little expensive...I paid £1200 for my saloon with a few more miles about 3 years ago.

Thank for the replies, I thought it was a bit pricey too, but someone disagreed as it's been sold on the strength of a video of the car before I could get to the dealer.

Back to autotrader to see what else is available. There are a couple of dame Edna saloons, but I'd rather go older as I prefer the look of the earlier cars and I'd rather not pay £500 road fund.

if your in a position to buy cash get on some of the owners forums and pick yourself up a well looked after bargain for a lot less.

and parts availability doesnt seem to be a problem the swedish government took over the parts side when saab when belly up

Aswell as the aeros, keep an eye out for later 'turbo editions'. Basically an aero with few more options as standard. Also the manuals are cheaper to tax than the autos if you can find one. I was lucky enough to pick up a 2010 turbo edition estate manual a few months ago for alot less than I could find a manual aero.

Pretty much, I believe some started out as aeros and some as vectors to get them sold as a turbo edition? The doorstep plates are a giveaway, mine say vector. The bigger 'T' in the 2.3T signifies the 260bhp engine, it should have a good spec. Mine is the same as that car but black and a manual so cheaper to tax. It also seems cheaper to insure than my previous aero's.

That is strong money but then again you’ll spend a fortune trying to make a bad car good and condition is everything. I take mine to TwoStroke in Bassingbourne. They sell good cars with a warranty but most are getting leggy now as owners tend to keep them.

Don’t discount a 150hp Vector. With a remap, they have about the same performance (225bhp) as an Aero. I bought mine for £1750 but have spent about £3k on it since in repairs! It’s like trigger’s broom.
