What if 9-5 can't be fixed?

9-5 linear TDI 2.2 2004\5 gearbox one mechanic said without really having a look he's probably right but I'm going for a2nd opinion then if its bad news where will I put it? Its actually running better than it ever did it just won't go into 2nd gear.the big girl seen better days and worked hard so I'd hate to see her scrapped.
