Symptoms of balance shaft issues: 09 2.0t

I'm getting a weird intermittent problem with our 09 2.0t. My wife doesn't see what the problem is and thinks I'm imagining it...
Intermittently, for prolonged periods (several hundred miles over several weeks) the engine is more noisy than I think it should be, quite 'boomy' and there's just a little bit of a vibration as you accelerate through the rpm range. Sometimes the problem disappears completely although the problem is present more than it's not. Power doesn't seem to be affected, if it is it's only marginal.
One garage quoted me to change the dual mass flywheel. It's a 4 pot petrol engine, the vibration really isn't that bad at all and I sincerely doubt it's the DMF.
Are problems with the balance shaft chain skipping teeth reasonably subtle? I gather the guide can disintegrate.
