Hi,

Could I canvas opinion from people with more knowledge on these two models than I have please?

I've got a pal who wants a Saab and I've found the following two options:

2010/59 Plate 9-3 1.9TDi 150bhp Turbo Edition with Nav - 50k - 1 owner from new - Manual - £3900.

2010/60 Plate 9-5 2.0Tdi 180bhp Vector SE (No Nav) - 80k - 2 owner car - Manual - £4900.

The 9-3 is the lower mileage car and cheaper to tax, but the 9-5 is more modern design and rarer.

Thoughts on the pros and cons from owners on day to day running and repairs at specialists please. I notice not all Saab specialists have the diagnostic equipment for the 9-5.

Any help and advice would be great as I deal in classic and sports cars generally and so these are not something I have many dealings with.

I assume the 9-5 is the next generation one that looks like a big insignia?

The ng9-5 does indeed use different diagnostics which is known as a Tech-3 device, the same device is used on other GM cars but you need the correct SAAB software on the tech-3 for it to work. Not many garages will have that device expect the larger ex SAAB franchises that still offer service and repair.

The SAAB NAV is awful in all models so that should not be a deal breaker when it comes to looking at either option.

The ng9-5 has some bits that are hard to get hold of so something to be very wary of, front screens are hard to come by and if they have HUD fitted are in the region of £800, power steering racks have been reported as a weak point and these to are hard to come by and very expensive.

The 9-3 and the older generation 9-5 (1998 - 2009) use tech 2 diagnostics.

Personally I prefer the 1998 - 2009 9-5's, I just picked up my second 9-5 Aero wagon yesterday 58 plate, 80K miles, 1 owner and FSSH for £2200. First thing I noticed though was its clearly not as well screwed together as the last one I had which was a 2002 9-5 Aero wagon, the interior quality is a little bit poorer compared to the older generation, but they are probably the cheapest way to getting into a 260 HP estate of this age.
