Hi, I've only had the car, Linear 06 convertible, two wks and just reversed it on the drive and the top end has suddenly gone very loud.
It's a very hard metallic knocking and the car is going back next wk to the sellers workshop (main dealer Vauxhall). Any thoughts on likely fix please?

It's the 2 litre petrol turbo, started it next morning and after a brief clatter the oil got round and quietened down.
Still sounds worse than when I bought it though so I'm thinking of returning the car unless they offer a proper mechanical fix, but I fear the engine is screwed.

How much did you pay and mileage?

62k miles, paid slightly under asking price.
Mileage backed up on mot history, car had been running very well and quiet until it happened.
I just can't imagine they will want to do enough to g'tee the engine will last.
Plenty of i'net history of oil problems in these engines but they appear to have been fixed about 3yrs before mine was built.

It depends - only way to check is to drop the sump (drain the oil first!).

clean it out (along with the strainer) and buy a kit from neo brothers (£60 ish from memory).

Better safe than sorry.

Or do what I did and ignore it till I broke the engine (first long drive the day after I bought it.....).

Now looking to buy another 2.0 turbo engine and put it in myself. The joys of buying a shed! (in my case, £500).....

I'm not familiar with your engine but on my 9000 the chain tensioner went slack over time which allowed the exhaust camshaft timing to change. It sounded like a tractor.

Thanks for your replies, it's better now the oil is circulating I drove it an hour ago, but far from right plus I will be worried about next time etc. I would like to keep the car it's brilliant but I don't feel they will do enough to fix.
Hopefully wrong, I'll let you know!

What is is...9-3 or 9-5?

The timing chain tensioner snapped on my 9-3 which made the engine sound rough. Common problem apparently.
I replaced the tensioner (relatively easy), but the bit that snapped off is still in the sump somewhere!

Well the garage can't replicate the problem so looks like i have to decide next week whether to keep it or not.
I'm sure anyone seeing the video i took would be horrified at the noise but it's been good as gold with them.
Probably bring it home, take the (brand new) towbar off and get my money back on the car. Can't believe i'm even hesitating over it!

Hi I thought I'd give an update. The car had same problem a wk ago so is currently at a Saab specialist and I believe they have heard it making the death rattle.
I think they are stripping it down next week, if nothing is diagnosed I won't want it back.
Surely other cars have had this issue? Anyway here's hoping.....

Timing chains have been suspect on SAABs for years.

Yes I found a youtube video yesterday same noise and the poster said it was timing chain.
Here's hoping it is what the garage find....

Latest news is the timing and balancer shaft chains and all the bits and pieces are off and the new replacement kit going on tomorrow, so looking forward to getting it back.
Common problem apparently, as prev poster said, but nice to know I'll have a car with all that brand new.

The problem would of been the Balance Chain guide had broken. They are known to fail on these engines.

Timing chain tensioner.

Quite easy to replace. Mine has the remains on my tensioner still in the sump!
