9-3 Aero HID problem

We have a 2006 9-3 Aero Cabrio with HIDs.
Had it nearly 2 years, but have suffered from an infuriating and intermittent issue with the offside headlamp.
It has 'blown' a few times, sometimes lasting months, sometimes weeks. Has been fine for around 6 months now, but went again over the weekend.
I've replaced the 'box' on the back of the bulb (ballast?) and the bulb a few times. Strangely, cheap Chinese bulbs last longer than OEM spec. Philips.
None of this has been a permanent fix - so, I'm assuming we need to replace the igniter (?) box underneath the headlamp?
I have a spare, but no time or inclination to remove the bumper to gain access - so my local mechanic will get the job, however, he's no expert in diagnosing HID related issues, being rather 'old school'!
