There is an O ring on the oil strainer pick up that should be replaced

Also, 2 of the O rings for the oil pipe to filter housing.

If any of these have failed or are missing, I think it could give problems

One would hope your saab specialist changed them when they did the sump drop.

I'll pop back next week and ask about the o rings.

Re the breather kit, they pretty much advised me to stop spending anymore on the car and run it until it dies or needs another mot.

I got the car as a gamble, i have a amount i'm not prepared to go over repairing it as i have a working clio cup in the garage i can use and a couple of hundred pounds here another couple there and all of a sudden the £500 saab has become a £2000 car your kind if tied into.

sorry - i did read the other thread but can't remember the details

is the oil light flicking on at idle and does raising the revs put it out? if so, what is the idle speed?

i'm guessing the oil level is where it should be and that a leak hasn't sprung up since you got the car back? sometimes you can pick up a few psi by an oil and filter change, whether it's due or not.

after that, oil seals/pressure seals/o-rings etc

then mains bearings - oil flowing through too quickly to maintain adequate pressure (my guess). doesn't necessarily mean the engine's toast and with nursing could still provide 000's of miles use - any untoward noises?

a heavier oil might help to mask the problem if the car's not a keeper

oil light only flickers at idle , blip the throttle and it goes.

idle speed at cold start up is 800-900

oil is at max, no sign on floor of oil leak

maybe the repaired big end was a bit of a bodge job and the clearances aren't correct?

just taken it for a good hours thrash over exmoor and you'd never know there's a problem the engine pulls really strongly it isn't knocking or noisy , the oil light doesn't come on ( as the computers been programmed to turn it off now), however that's the only thrashing it'll get from now on i'll be changing up by 3k to take strain off the engine.

thicker oil and drive it !!

it'll either go bang or it won't and there's always a few hundred to be made back when breaking an Aero - TD04, wheels, leather, kit (bumpers can be surprisingly expensive, even used, if you have the "shark-tooth" kit), big brakes kit for lesser models (if you have a pre-facelift), xenons, displays if good etc etc.

when i get one like this i make a mental note of what it could break for and spend up to that point but no more

what good would thicker oil do?

surely if the oil pumps not pumping the oil around properly , then thicker oil would be even less effective?

it may help by "filling" any slack in the bearings. course, it may not and if the car's anything other than a snotter then not recommended but i formed an impression that vehicle may be considered "disposable"/not worth large expenditure.

there's a new oil pump fitted so i'm assuming that it's pumping OK and the problem is elsewhere
