When my 9-5 did this it was the crank sensor.
Replaced the CPS 2 years ago - Would it go again that quickly ?Car just stopped working with no notice at all - Quite scary had I been going at speed.

Didn't have it cut out when running. It would run perfectly and then you'd switch it off and it would turn over but refuse to fire up.
No the car just cut out with no warning and has not started since - Its like the fuel is not getting to the plugs but the pump has been replaced and powers all ok so not sure what else it is.Med1c said:

Hmm. From memory a failed CPS should just drop the car into limp mode rather than kill it, but it's a common failure to start. I'm most likely wrong however. I'd be tempted to pull the CPS and check the resistance across it (I'm sure google can tell you what it should be)If not CPS, fuel pump perhaps?

Thanks Mr E for your advice - I replaced pump a few days ago so will give the cps a replacement to see if that works :-)If not CPS, fuel pump perhaps?
does the rev counter "twitch" when cranking? no signal from the CPS results in no movement when cranking. resistance is between 770 and 950 ohms but substitution is the only real test as they can move in and out of recognisable values
can you hear the pump priming when you power on?
the usual suspects would certainly include the DIC (you can test it off the car with a spare plug). check the underside for cracks, evidence of arcing, sulphurous odour etc.
another possibility is an iffy ignition switch.
throttle bodies can fail but this type of fault usually "evolves" and should give a CEL - "performance related issue". the sensors get gummy over time and one will go out of range throwing up the CEL and often triggering limp mode rather than shutting down.

over on uksaabs someone posted just up a very similar cut out/fail to restart. turns out it was an open circuit on the injection - 30A fuse had blown, worth checking unless recovery already did
paul
Hi Paul just checked the fuse and its all ok - Im at a genuine loss as to what to do !paul
Im going to try OBD but do you know where the plugin is based on the Saab 9-5 ?
Thanks for your help and to everyone else.

the diagnostic port is recessed into the lower trim/knee panel underneath the steering wheel - there's a little pull down flap where the panel meets the centre console, it's tucked away behind that
paul
Thanks Paul - I will check to see what codes come up.paul
Also just to confirm when cranked the rev counter jumps around.
Medic.
sounds like CPS should be OK then and that's usually a hot/cold start problem anyway. whereabouts are you - ideally could do with dropping a known good DIC in to see what happens
given that it's cranking then ignition switch is also probably ok.
could be low fuel pressure.
i'd also check all earth leads, a common cause of non-starts. have heard of the wiring connector to the DIC failing internally giving a difficult to trace failure to start
might be "back to basics" troubleshooting time though - did the AA express an opinion as to why the pump wasn't working or did they just assume it had failed? whilst it is a common fail on a 9-5 i'm just wondering if a non-working pump was a symptom rather than the cause

Its really odd Paul - It literally just stopped and eveything from new DIC to Fuel Pump and now CPS has been changed but nothing ! given that it's cranking then ignition switch is also probably ok.

Will check OBD and let you know how I get on - Thanks for your time on this problem Paul and to everyone else.
think our posts just crossed - i wonder if the pump not running was a symptom rather than the cause. is the new one definitely priming when you ignition on ? - lift up the rear seat base and you'll clearly hear it when you turn the ignition to on. it'll then go quiet until it gets a signal from the ecu demanding fuel
immobiliser did occur to me but i'm pretty sure it wouldn't even crank if the immobiliser wasn't switching out
