1999 9-3 2.2 TID

I did want a unique first car, and I think I was successful. I did have to get a box fitted in order to be able to afford insurance which was the only downfall.

It is an absolutely superb commuter but it just does not meet my needs.. it is not the most fun car to drive being a slow, heavy diesel. Unlike most teens with there first cars I do not rag it. It is not a fast car so why bother driving it as if it is the fastest thing on the road (tell that to the people my age in there little corsa's!).

I have been really wanting a proper drivers car lately, I also really wanted a classic/collectable car that I know I will not lose too much money on, but my parents, especially my dad insisted I waited a year, which is understandable.

So I was blown away when I got in from work and the first thing he says to me is, 'Have you seen that collectable rare Saab for sale about 15 miles away?' I immediately knew he was on about a Viggen 9-3 and I knew how few were in the UK, so I took a look and the next day we went down and had a look at it.

It is in superb condition, even for 155,000 miles on the clock (had a engine rebuild 50,000 miles ago) the owner had just finished restoring it. When we finally got talking to one of the sales men and he realised it was me and 18 year old who was interested in it he was blown away, and was determined not to let me test drive it when I mentioned it. His response was that it has only just been cleaned and polished and he does not want to go out in the rain. Minutes later he was getting me to fill out a finance form, when my dad interrupted saying it all seemed very unnecessary and that should be the very last thing I should be doing if I was certainly buying the car, the dealers response was that what is the point of him looking at it or driving it if he cannot even afford it! At this point my dad said we were leaving and walked out...

Anyway enough drama, I am still interested in the car and hoping to go back on Saturday when the rude sales man is not in.

My problem is the insurance (shock), I contacted my current insurer and they cannot insure such a powerful car with a box fitted and I would only be able to cancel my policy. I did a quote on money supermarket and the cheapest I got back was from elephant for £3100 a year.. no black box. I am happy to pay that but it is hard trying to convince my parents.

Is anyone aware of any specialist insurers that might take me on for a cheaper sum? or am I just wasting my time and a lot of money? The plan is to keep the car as long as possible hoping to value will increase meaning I wouldn't of lost out on too much money.....

Thoughts? D:

£5k seems a bit steep especially for a car with that mileage, when I was nosing around these a year or so ago I'm sure they were a couple of grand cheaper than this. Prices surely haven't risen this much?

Also, it might be quick but it's not exactly a drivers car either - the torque steer on these is apparently something else and I doubt they'd corner that much better than your current '93.

Have you tried looking a the 'normal' turbo '93s? You could get one and remap/tune it much more cheaply

OP, off subject....are you convinced that it is worth £3-3.5k more than a standard Aero? Good luck with your insurance and keep us posted on this biggrin

I had the "normal" Aero of that shape. Insurance for me at 19 with 2 years no claims was about £1800. Got it remapped and it dyno'd at 242(ish) hp. The torque steer was, as has been mentioned, something else.

Very nice car, but make sure the bulkhead has been attended to (they can crack easily), and preferably (although this may be wishful thinking) that it has the "Viggen rescue kit" or some form of steering rack clamp which helps alleviate some of the rather eye-widening torque steer...these are available aftermarket though if not. Or maybe work that into the price?

ETA: I was with, and still am with, Elephant. They seemed to be the cheapest for whichever car I was looking at, all fairly quick ones.

I believe it does already have the torque steer rescue kit fitted along with upgraded sports suspension, I will double check on the bulkhead when I go back tomorrow.

As for the price, I am no expert on value but for the condition it is in, I thought 5k was not too bad, does anyone think differently? I wondering how much these cars will be worth in say 10 years time and if it will be worth while.

No offence, but it's an old Saab. Are they really collectable? Also, it'll be the second car you've ever bought - odds are you won't own it in 10 years time...

So, £5k for a leggy 14 year old car with baggy leather on the driver's seat and a missing Saab cap on one of the wheels? You must be mad (from a non-Saab officianardo's perspective)! biggrin You could get a newer Volvo C70 for less than that, for example.

Check the wheels - Viggen wheels bend easily. To be honest, if you were my son @ 18 the answer would be NO I`m afraid...

Thanks for the replies/advice, I did decide to pass on it, 5k on an old Saab with 150,000 miles does seem a bit far fetched, I would have happily gone for it if it was 2-3k.

I better get my one years ncb then start looking for something different, though I am tempted to swap my current car for something just as cheap if I can get it on my current policy.

Get a nice 90`s mini cooper & it will still be worth what you paid for it when you`ve got your NCB. Good luck!

Why not look for a sorted 9-3 SE lpt then source a viggen kit & interior for it? (Sorted as in the handling's been modded already as it costs a good £2k to sort these out)

Then get a cheeky remap for it off one of the tuners on UKSaabs and take it to 220ish bhp.

Have a read through here for a little inspiration wink

£5k is lots for a Viggen. You could get a nice 9000 Aero and a T16s for that!

I paid £1400 for my Viggen with 91k on the clock. Nice enough car, but not what I'd call special.
