'07 9-5 AERO: engine check light & high idle speed
Discussion
I generally run my ’07 AERO on regular unleaded Shell fuel but do 3 or 4 times a year run it for around 1.5k miles on their Optimax/V-Power/whatever it is called now.
I don’t do this for an improvement in performance and to be honest there is no way I could say I notice a difference in performance or MPG. However, many moons ago EVO magazine ran an article on (I think) 3 cars that they ran for a period of time on various fuels and IIRC the conclusion was that there was no significant improvement in performance or MPG either. Interestingly though they picked up on a reduction in carbon deposits on the valves when Optimax was used so assumed that the claimed cleaning properties did indeed appear to help cleanse the engine. It seemed logical to me so I have used it since then.
I have owned my AERO for nearly three years now and it has so far (reaches out to touch wood) not missed a beat as far as the engine goes. However I have been on holiday recently in the Borders and ended up using Tesco fuel as I got a number of 5p off per litre vouchers. On Sunday I filled up the car in Torridon (i know that isn't in the Borders before anyone says anything) and the engine check light came on when I got back to Edinburgh. Nothing mad in the run back just a steady 70/80mph on the A9 depending on single/dual carriageway. Yesterday it wasn’t running good at all and felt like it was losing power and in neutral (mine is an auto) it was revving up to 1.5k.
Unfortunately my garage couldn’t take the car yesterday and given that the indicator was a ‘get it checked’ as opposed to a ‘don’t drive it’ one I took it to my local Shell station and filled it up. I had a bit of running around to do last night and the symptoms remained. Thankfully on starting it up this morning the light was off and the idle speed is back to normal and the loss of power seems to have gone.
Anyone got any thoughts? Fuel? MAF (or the like) on the blink?
