Intermittent power loss on 9-3?
Discussion
Bit of a strange issue today and I think it could be turbo gasket related, but just seeing if anyone else has had a similar issue. I've got a 53-plate 2.2TiD and when I put my foot down through 2,3,4 gears there was the sound of "rushing air flow" coming from the air vents (the heater fan was off), then a complete loss of power i.e. as if the turbo had been switched off and the cruise control would not engage either?? Yet it still drove (albeit, slow) and could not do any more than 60mph. No warning lights and nothing on the SID.
Pulled over, switched off engine, popped the bonnet and nothing obvious looking. Restarted, turbo back on full spin, cruise was working... drove for another 50 miles, needed another boot-full to overtake, happened again (repeated above and then ok). Seems ok at the moment, but obviously needs looking at in detail.
Anyone else experience similar issues and what was the outcome(s)? Thanks - Paul.

I am no expert but maybe this...

Mine did 0-60 in about a fortnight one day and it turned out to be the particulates thingy! Regeneration sorted it...

Hi, thanks for the pointer to the DPF thread.
Fortunately, my car does not have a DPF, as they were introduced from 2006 and mine is a late 2003 model. Car is going in to www.motorvationsaab.co.uk down here in Kent on 5th for a few bits and this issue will be looked at. It could be that the EGR valve is clogging up, so a removal and clean up might do the job. Will get them to also check the Turbo itself and MAF unit, to be on the safe side... funny thing is that its been fine all day today. With any luck it won't cost me too much (that said, its still under warranty so fingers crossed).
Cheers

My EGR kept clogging up too so thats a good call. I replaced it in the end, but all prior to the manual regeneration I had done.Fortunately, my car does not have a DPF, as they were introduced from 2006 and mine is a late 2003 model. In the end I sold the diesel and bought a petrol as my commute went down to 1 mile per way! No need for a diesel anymore
Might be worth trying the car with the MAF disconnected? I had an EGR problem with mine which basically crippled the car and it did run a bit better when the AA man disconnected the the MAF.
Whooshing air could be the turbo? I'd be interested to hear what your specialist says. Hopefully the bill won't be too bad.
Interesting to know that the DPF wasn't fitted to the 9-3 till 2006. Mine is a 2005 model, so no DPF is plus point when I come to sell it later this year. I've noticed that people are advertising cars and have 'No DPF' in the headline!

I'll post up the findings after 5th April, following its visit to the specialist. Another possible cause of the air rush noise, might be a split pipe around the turbo area - which will be a simpler / cheaper fix I'm sure. If I drive it sensibly, then it drives ok but a bootful knocks it out, so you have to stop and restart engine - very strange!
Indeed, NO DPF is very much a plus point and a good selling point IMO. Saves the trouble and expense of getting rid of it as many people have. I think once I've had mine for a few more months, will probably get the Remap / Retune done for 150+BHP and better economy.
Apart from this niggle, I have to say the 9-3 in Vector trim is very nice! Loving the seats and have recently done a 450 mile trip in it with no worries - the trouble is its so comfortable, would be very easy to nod off!

QUICK UPDATE
So if you are experiencing a drop in power, with the car then running into "limp mode" and you hear a rushing of air as you accelerate, then chances are it will be this...
- Unscrew the plastic engine cover
- With a cold engine, feel along the large feeder pipe that connects from the engine to intercooler
- Chances are this has either perished around the seals (lack of vacuum) or totally split
- Check all pipes in this area for similar, as multiple replacements hoses may be needed
With mine it was both of the above.
New Saab Hose ordered through specialist at £54.00 +VAT - fitting will take no more than 30 mins and is a simple enough DIY job, or a small charge at your local garage if you prefer.
Hope this helps and was a total relief to know it was not the turbo unit or intercooler, just a sodding a hose.
Cheers
