Steering lock malfunction saab 9-3

Need some advice, I had a fault with my 53 plate 9-3 this morning. i stopped at the shops, when I got back in the key would n't turn, display said steering lock malfunction, contact service. RAC came out and disconnected the battery which reset it and it's now working fine. I've spoke to my local saab specialist, they think its a sim unit? or a fault with the lock, but can't do anything till it happens again, which they say is likely. Basically I have to wait for it to break down again and then get it towed. Has anyone come across this before? How much will it cost to repair, or should I just carry a 10mm spanner with me just in case? Or just trade it in? What should I expect for a 53 plate silver 2.0T Vector with 100k on the clock?

mine does it every now and then, i take the key out waggle the steering wheel and try it again, it usually works ok at the 3rd or 4th attempt
It probably happens about every 2 or 3 months but its never bothered me
