This:

Or this:

Or if you want a bit more turbo fun then:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...
Last one is a touch older than you said, but worth every penny or the performance.

With the miles you're doing the cost of petrol vs diesel shouldnt really make much difference, and the car with sound much nicer for it. There are loads more on the classifieds section on here or on Atrader ifyou wanted an auto instead.
I'd say forget the linear (looks v cheap and nasty IMO) and head straight for the Vector as they tend to cost less used (??? More on the market perhaps) and you get MUCH more kit and better seats too.

Hope this helps! Happy SAABing!

I'll assume you're looking for a 9-3, and not a 9-5? Major milestones in the 9-3 SS life was the dropping of the 2.2TiD in late 2004, when Saab switched to the Fiat 1.9 8v (120bhp) and 16v (150bhp) engines; after that, the interior was facelifted in September 2006, so you get the new style dash. In September 2007 the exterior was facelifted - new front end, new doors, etc.
Personally I'd be looking for a post-September 2006 model with that new dash. And avoid the auto if you want any kind of credible economy (whether petrol or diesel).

Surely anything from after 92 is just a pimped up Vauxhall? A nice 900 16v Turbo is the way to go.

Oh god, you've got me looking at SAAB's again! I swear i will have to buy another one if this carries on!
Unfortunately if you are looking at £4k you won't get the new style dash without buying a high miler (but there's nothing wrong with that if properly maintained!) such as:

Here you go:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

And:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

Or this (if you can get over the grey plastic skirts):
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

The only issue with that linear is that you dont get the "in dash" screen, meaning you will get the billy-basic audio system as well (poo, and difficult to change). The vector is the better buy in my book!
Unfortunately if you are looking at £4k & automatic you won't get the new style dash without buying a high miler (but there's nothing wrong with that if properly maintained!) such as:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...
And that's ^^^^^ a LOT of car for the money!

Or you could go 9-5 for ultimate "waftability":

Lovely :P

I personally wouldn't buy another Linear or Linear Sport; I spent a lot of time & money upgrading the spec to near-Aero spec, so next time I would just buy the correct spec at the beginning.

If you're buying a pre-Sept 2006 car (which in theory should be an 06 plate or earlier) pick the right stereo for you. Upgrading it is costly. If you buy a 56 plate or newer, make sure it has indeed got the new style dash - all stereo's after that time have MP3 input, and there's no separate SID screen in the centre top of the dash. Some 56 plated cars - and even the odd 07 - have the old style dash as they sat in a dealer that long!

I know that's just a petrol-on-the-fire statement, but they're chalk & cheese :-)

The 9-3 got the new dash in Sept 2006, the 9-5 got facelifted a year earlier in Sept 2005 to become what most people call the Dame Edna because of those chrome headlight surrounds. Same aux-in socket on the front of both the facelifted 9-3 and facelifted 9-5.
I'm on my 3rd 9-5, but have owned precisely zero 9-3's, so it's hard for me to compare. The 9-5 is an older design, but a great design. Very spacious, comfortable, and very quick (well, mine is LOL). The 9-3 is smaller, lighter, and possibly (!) more sporty. Horses for courses really.
Worth noting that from Sept 2005 the 9-5 dropped the 2.2TiD (old school GM diesel with 120bhp) for the 1.9 Fiat 16v engine, so 150bhp. The 120bhp 1.9 8v wasn't an option in the 9-5 - probably just as well as the 9-5 is a solid lump of metal!
Both the 2.2TiD and 1.9TiD were offered as 5 speed manual or automatic gearboxes in the 9-5.

I can recommend the 9-3, I have the Arc which was between tke Linear & the Vector and was made in Sept 2003 but by the time it got to Oz & was sold it was 2004, it has done 96,000k so far and I like its looks, finish, handling, brakes and interior equipment. The motor is the 2.0t and the transmission is 5sp auto, it is our only everyday car but we do less than 10,000k pa - definately the best car we've had.

Have you chosen a car yet? I'm late to this thread - if it was me, I'd have gone for a 9-5 Dame Edna Vector or Vector Sport. I got a Linear SE and wished I'd got a Vector with the leather and the nicer 17 inch wheels. Regret not going for a Turbo Edition 9-5 I was looking at, at the time I bought my Linear SE.

Your budget should get you a facelift 9-3 which were 06 onwards. Much nicer interior and at least you can upgrade the stereo with ease rather than resorting to the previous models Fibre interface system.

Lots of things to check on 93s

- Has the cambelt/water pump been changed?
- Do the wipers do a full sweep?
- Does the engine reach the right running temp?
- Try and get a look at the intercoolers (they can split?)
- Does it run ok at motorway cruising. Signs of miss-firing can be the EGR valve on its way out.
- Has the alternator been replaced?

These checks are all related to the 1.9 TID 150 engine. I'm lead to beleive that the 2.2 120bhp is slightly more reliable if less refined than the 150.

They are great cruisers, but unfortunately, mine has not been the picture of reliability.
