Bit of a dilemma here, have my eye on a nice 9000 to replace my Aero but have just seen a nice 9-5 at the right money. I know bugger all about the 9-5 is it a worthy successor to the venerable 9000?

It's all dependent on what you want from the car. The 9-5 is the 'nicer' overall car but the engine has it's issues.

Despite being near identical in design to the 9000 engine the later B235 suffers from sludging of the oil (I'm led to believe it's down to a bad PCV design) as such the sump needs to be taken off and cleaned along with the oil strainer as part of regular preventative maintainence.

Also the B235R isn't as strong as the earlier B234R, I think the standard internals suffer at around the 320bhp mark. That is all of course if you start fettling it. If not and you keep on top of the sludging issue then the 9-5's are actually the better overall choice.

Hope this helps

It's gone now so the decision has been made for me, hopefully I'll be picking up a 9000 this weekend....did you get my email?

9-5 for a nice quick, comfy cruiser, I found my Griffin much more refined than any of my 3 9000's...also a nicer place to be in for long journeys. Plus their a he'll of a lot of car for the money these days.

But definitely a 9k for some pure lunacy....can be made very very quick for not a lot of dosh. Throw £2k at it and not a lot will touch it....I'll be getting another, I really REALLY miss my Aero frown

Believe Saab made changes to the 2004 Saab 9-5 Aeros. All Aeros should use fully synthetic oil though!

The 9-5 Aeros are very quick and surprisingly good on fuel!

right, picked the car up and it has a problem, while under hard acceleration it has an almighty hiccup and then carries on as normal, any ideas?

Might be hitting fuel cut? When you floor it does it boost ok then stop suddenly for a second or two (like yove hit a wall and lost all power) then come back on ok? Mine did this on the old Maptun map, really annoying. Accelerate gently and it was fine, drop down a gear for a fast overtake and it used to slam into fuel cut!

I'd take it easy until you get the remap sorted mate, definitely get the T7 mod done though.

Yup, that's it, apparently it had this issue 6 months ago and was 'cured' with a new apc. So I have the choice of taking it back to the dealer over 100 miles away or getting it done myself. Not a happy bunny
