Discussion
Hi all, I'm thinking of buying a 95 estate and noticed that some 1.9tdi engines have been advertised as 5 speed and some 6. I think all the 93 1.9 are 6 speed, and as I think its the same engine, I am a bit confused. Can anyone tell me what the situation is. Also whilst here, any comments about these cars. I will be doing about 40k miles pa.
Thanks
Thanks
No manual 9-5 of the 1998-2009 vintage came with a 6 speed box - they're all 5 speed, whether petrol or diesel. All diesel auto 9-5's are 5 speed, as no 9-5 Diesel was offered before 2002 - and that's when Saab dropped the 4 speed Aisin Warner box for the 5 speed Aisin Warner box.
The run down of available models are:
2002-2005 2.2TiD - old school 120bhp GM unit featuring a cam chain
2006-2009 1.9TiD - Fiat 16v 150bhp unit with a cambelt & DPF
2002-2004 3.0TiD - Isuzu engine that cost Saab millions to put right - AVOID
Contrary to what's written above, the 2.2 is the warhorse, very reliable, does about 45mpg on average in manual form, but is noisy on idle, it's not a common-rail diesel, and produces (from memory) 175g CO2/km. I used to have one, possibly goes down as the best 9-5 of the 3 I've owned.
The 150bhp 1.9 unit is definitely more nimble, at least as economical, but has a cambelt that needs changing at 72,000 miles (or 40,000 miles if you believe some sceptics) and should be changed with the water pump (the pump seizes, the belt fails, the engine is destroyed). These engines also suffer from non-functioning EGR valves that need expensive replacement or periodic cleaning carried our properly - not just lashings of carburettor cleaner sprayed in there! But that's a pitfall of any modern diesel, not just this Fiat unit. Combine that with the DPF woes that befall most modern diesels that aren't driven enough - but at 40k miles per annum, that won't be an issue.
Avoid the 3.0 V6 TiD at all costs; good stories about these engines are far outweighed by the 'I had to scrap my 9-5 as it was uneconomical to fix it' ones.
Spec wise, any 9-5 is ok, but the Linear's are basic - usually no cruise or parking sensors, and a stereo that has no oomph! Linear Sports are slightly better, Vector's are good, the later Anniversary / Turbo editions have pretty much everything you would need. The factory sat nav from 2002 to 2005 is really bad though, best avoided if I'm honest.
