My sons driving our old 9-5 2.2TDi up the road just now. He's called to say the engine light is on and there is a lack of power. This sounds like the car is in limp mode, it's done about 80,000 miles and we've had very litte problems with it. Any idea's where I should start looking apart from blown turbo!!!
This sounds very similar to the problem I had last week. NB If it's a blown turbo I guess there may be noticeable smoke.
Mine is an '06 9-3 1.9 Tdi cabriolet. Basically I had 0-60 in about 2 miles plus the engine management light was on. When plugged into a Bosch coding machine the code came up P1901 which is a Saab specific one which concerned itself with the diesel particulates.
My local garage suggested taking it to Saab who can do a full check to see if any pipes are cracked or faulty (relatively cheap); check to see if there is a faulty sender (bit more expensive); check on the EGR valve (more expensive if a new one is required c.£200 from memory); a manual regeneration of the particulate filter (relatively cheap); or - worst case - new cat etc (dead expensive)
I am not a mechanic (hence my garbled interpretation of mechanics above) but I would suggest getting it into Saab
Mine came to around £76 for the manual regen and full check (and they spotted a small error with my air con which was good )

It wasnt the turbo as I drove the car round the block and performance was fine. Light went out after a day or two so will need to drop it into the garage to plug computer in and see what it was. I'm assuming the car went into safe mode on the mway which cleared when he switched it off when he got here.
