I went to look at a SAAB 900 T16S yesterday, didn't have time to test drive it, but I'm hoping to go back tomorrow.

The ad states that there is an issue with second gear. It works fine under normal driving but can be difficult to select when driving hard, going from 3rd to 2nd.

Is this anything to worry about? New gearbox time soon? Probably nothing?

I know the 900 box is a bit fragile, and I've read the engine needs to come out to carry out repairs.

Thanks for reading.

Sounds like it could be the synchromesh on the gears. Could always drive around the problem and then get it sorted if/when it gets worse. Might be worth it if the car is very cheap, otherwise look for another one! Gearbox rebuild including fitting is about £1k minimum.

Sometimes changing the transmission fluid is supposed to help, too.

Cheers Royster, I've decided to give it a miss anyway.

I think.

Thanks.

The four speed is stronger than the five speed box.
This is more likely a gear linkage issue, than anything else.
