I've just had my 9-5 done. I would've been happy to do it myself 'in a few weeks' when I had some free time but ended up leaving it with my mechanic. Bloody good job too as on completion he said he had no idea how the engine was getting any oil at all. Those few weeks could've been enough to end up with a seized engine as the strainer was totally blocked.

He said the worst bit was the exhaust removal (exhaust studs needed some heat) followed by actually cleaning the sump and pick up pipe.

Unless you have access to a lift and gas burner for mentioned seized exhaust studs then I personally would say leave it in with a mechanic as it would be a bit of a ballache to do at home.

Whatever you do I would then recommend refreshing the PCV system and remember to stick to the correct synthetic oil.

sorry havent updated my proflie.have just bought a 9-5 aero. just changed front discs and pads, sorted an annoying knock on steering (hopefully). due to the worry of not being able to undo exaust bolts i decided to not do a sump drop and just gave it an oil change.Ill get that done on next service i think.

Do it asap. Yes i did it at home but really depends on the exhaust bolts and having somewhere dry. I undid my exhaust at the turbo.

http://johnossaab9-5.synthasite.com/9-5-sump-drop.... might help.

I used oven cleaner on/in my sump. Also use a suitable sealant when putting back together.
Loctite 518 is the favourite but I used Wellseal as I have it for my VW.

Have you got the updated PCV Kit? Neos for best price.

We had ours done at the local Saab dealer, and they managed to break the studs - turned out to be a lot more work than it should have been, though they honoured their quote.

What years are been classed as early model 9-5's?

I have just brought a 2004 Aero.

Well it wasn't really due a service but yesterday had the following done.

Sump Drop - was in perfect condition
Full Service - every fluid drained and changed new plugs etc.
New bushes on the rear, fronts only done 6k ago.

Feels loads tighter on the road and just smoother all round. Few hundred £££'s spent but well worth it as will be keeping for a bit.
