Can anyone explain what saab was doing with their twin turbo diesel engine?

I took a 1 year old sport wagon version out for a test drive and liked it a lot, but they wanted a more cash than I was willing to part with.

Looking into older versions now and the co2 / mpg values seem to vary quite a bit depending on the year. Does anyone have a definitive on how to tell which version of the power plant is which?

Also are there any reliability issues I need to bear in mind with this engine, such as water pump, erg etc?

Yes, a complete nightmare.

I bought an 09 12 months ago, researched the mpg (50+) / road tax before visiting the dealer, only to find when I got there that the display sheet gave totally different information, ie not as many mpg's (48) and higher tax cost, yet the claimed BHP / 0-60 were exactly the same.

The dealer explained that there has been almost a 'tweak' / year since the engine was introduced with no badge change, resulting in increased mpg, and reduced CO2's.

Up until about 6 months ago the badge was always a TTiD, with another give away sign been the twin exhaust pipes (which I like), the later / curent model has no twin pipes (a backward step in my opinion), and new badge which at present I can't remember, but it has a '4' on the end of it,

I have ranted on, but the bottom line is, that you don't really know.

Mine will return 50+ on a long motorway run if I keep the speed at 75 - 80, but the average including a bit of motorway, country lanes and town is more line a 45mpg average, rather than the claimed 48.

Be interesting to know if the later moidels return an average of 50+??

When I bought the car my road tax was £125 (I think later models are £90 ish), but I have just outr another 12 months on and it cost £165> Have not checked yet to see if the dealer made a mistake, but I am guessing the DVLA won't have with the renewal?

Thanks for the info.
Not sure if the twin pipes thing is a strict rule, the 60 plate ttid aero sportwagon we drove at the weekend had the ttid4 badge and the twin pipes. Looked purposeful.

Shame the best mpg and co2 is only on the most recent engines, I'll probably have to rule them out on cost. At least the performance remains the same on older variants.

I have the Aero which does have the visible twin pipes, and I know at the time of looking lower spec'd models also had twin pipes, may be with the newer modles only the Aero has visible pipes? I have seen models with the TiDD4 badge with no visible pipes, they look very plain (in my opinion).

Happy hunting!
