9-5 1.9TiD Estate
Discussion
Looking at changing our family Focus to a slightly more family friendly 9-5 Estate. There seems to be some good value for the 'Dame Edna' facelift at the minute.
How strong is this engine in the 9-5? Obviously it is a great Fiat unit, but is it pokey enough to haul the mass around? Also what mpg is typical?
Last one... how does the engine mate to the auto gearbox? or is it best sticking to a manual?

Hi I have a 9-3 with the 1.9 tdi150bhp auto which is the same engine as the 9-5 I have had no big problems engine or gearbox,I have had the alternator and egr valve replaced at around 90k,it is now around the 120k and still going strong, mpg is around 36 mpg,the manual cars get over 40 mpg.
I had an 04 3.0 Tid from new for 120k miles. I had a loan 1.9 Tid on a couple of occasions whilst mine was in for a service, and I always felt them to be OK, but you had to work the engine hard, ie perhaps not quite as powerful as needed for such a heavy body?
I curently have a 9-3 with the 180 Ttid engine, which is probably what the mass of the 9-5 needs?

I am tempted by the auto but equally tempted by the better fuel economy you mention, so i'm guessing it might be wiser to reap the rewards of a leaner manualJohn D9395 said:

Interesting. Although I don't necessarily want to tune the engine, I guess a tuning box would see an increase to somewhere around the 180 mark and could be a simple solution to the performance issue.I curently have a 9-3 with the 180 Ttid engine, which is probably what the mass of the 9-5 needs?
I’m currently running a 2004 3.0tid 9-5 estate. I get a fairly constant 38mpg, (manual box, not a particularly economical driver), so I’d guess the 1.9 should be very similar, given that it will need to be revved more and the fact that the 9-5 is quite a heavy car. I haven’t driven a 1.9tid but based on my experience running the 180bhp V6, 150bhp should feel fine, not fast by any means but certainly adequate enough, and if a few months down the line you feel it’s too slow then look at fitting a tuning box. I think the extra 30-40bhp would make a noticeable difference.

Having had a succession of >2.0L 5 and 6 pot cars, I was surprised at how good the 1.9TiD (150) is. It's certainly not as refined as a BMW / MB 6 pot at idle and is a bit slow off the mark but the 0-60 figure is only half the story from 30-70 it pulls like a train.
1st gear is useless for anything other than a slow start.
The way the 150 is mapped aswell means that it's quite laggy.
BUT as you say, 30mph+ (all the way to well over the lepton area) is hugely impressive, and can leave some hot hatches etc looking mildly perplexed

I have a 2005 9-3 TID 150 and I have had mine for just over 12k now and I agree with that statement. Bit slow off the mark, but I think some of that is gearing, but put your foot down and 50mph and it is very impressive. Mine has been quite pricey in that 12k.
New intercooler and alternator, oil service and vacume pipe (£850)
New thermostat/housing - £150
New wiper arm linkage - £200
Car also needs cambelt and waterpump in the upcoming months and I know it will need tyres for the MOT!
For the record, I get anything from 39-43mpg
Prices on the 08> 93s are tumbling. Such a fantastic looking car. I think I will end up replacing my 93 with a newer one!! Aeros can be had from £5.5K and upwards!
