hi, just joined the group and really need some good advice, i have a beautiful saab 95 2.3 turbo that i adore, it started to tap on the top of the engine, it has no lights come on i.e, oil light, engine management light. it has no loss of power and is not running lumpy, the engine still has its performance. i have had the tappets renewed and the oil and filter changed and the engine flushed to no avail. has anyone any ideas? i have been told by one mechanic that the engine is knackered but i just cant believe it as apart from the tapping she runs perfect. can somebody please help x

How many miles on the clock, and what service history? These engines are known for sludging (at the pickup strainer). If you don't know the history, I'd get the sump dropped and checked out. If it's bad it probably means that there has been some oil starvation at the top end, leading to your tapping noise. Alternatively it could be the timing chain as these do rattle after a bit, mine was a bit rattly for over 100k miles! Does the noise come from the top or from the front cover. If it's from the top and the pickup in the sump is fine, I'd remove the top cover and manually lubricate the engine from the top, to see if you can silence the tapping, it is though possible that an oilway is completely sludged up starving a moving part from oil.
Make sure that only fully synthetic oil is used on these engines, use of semi-synthetic, etc is what leads to the sludging. My 95 did 221k miles with no sump drop but I knew the full service history, and changed the oil very regularly.

Thanks everyone for your input, iv had the car to a reliable garage that deal with saabs this afternoon, im gutted they have said there is hardly any oil getting into the cam which is a real shame as she is a beautiful car but cost of repair is to pricey, looks like il have to try to make some cash in selling it for spares, anyone know if anyone would be interested in the whole car as spares as i have nowhere to strip it
