Anyone know?

it's an alkaline powdery stuff (looks like sugar in fact, funnily enough)
you use if for cleaning up paintwork (on wood etc, not on cars) before you repaint

From dict.leo.org:

I have just been looking around at shops in Frankfurt for sugar soap for cleaning dirty painted walls.

Almost all Germans I spoke to had not heard of it, and the practice here seems to be to wallpaper a rented flat when you enter, paint it, and remove the wallpaper when you leave.

However when I did find it, the product was known as "Anlauger"

http://www.molto.de/produkt_anwend_ergebnis.html?g...

Abbeizer seems to be for REMOVING paint, while sugar soap is used for CLEANING paintwork.

'seite nicht gefunden'

I could ask in the shop, it's just that I've spent the last few weeks in and out of my local Bauhaus, trying to describe loads of awkward things i didn't know in German (bought a house recently and doing a few jobs on it)

Edit: Anlauger seems to be the very thing though, thanks
I did check leo out first, but didn't get into the discussion bit

Sorry, quoted leo without testing the link. Try this one: Molto - Molto Anlauger.
