Aa bit bored and unemployed at the moment so might hop on to a plane to Stuttgart (not that cheap @£125 return) for a day or two to check out the Mercedes museum there. Hope my GCSE german gets me by!
What else should/could I check out while I'm there? Are Porsche there too? Do you have to pay to get in to Mercedes or Porsche? Suggestions not car related very welcome - historical, landscapey, something a bit different to the UK...

Could I get away without renting a car while I'm out there (as I say it'll only be a couple of days)?

Looking to do the factory tour, apparently Porsche is closed (panam introduction) but Mercedes should be available, will book in advance.
Cheers for the link.

Another technical museum at Sinsheim, west of Heilbronn

There's the Black Forest to the south of Stuttgart.
Good, but a pale shadow of the Alps further south.

Well I'm back - I don't believe anyone mentioned that it's really far! 440 miles from Dunkirk according to the internet, and 6 hours 28 minutes. This is plainly not true - I'm not sure how far it was but I'll tell you we didn't arrive til afternoon on day 2, and had to leave on day 3! So it was a one day stop off. Did get to see Merc and Porsche though. I'll put up pics. Had a good time. Not sure I mentioned I was driving, it wasn't the plan but proved cheaper. I should have pointed that out...
I loved the Germans. We met a bunch in a bar who thought we were hilarious for driving this distance, and even more hilarious when they asked when we had to go back and we told them - the next day. Brilliant. We stopped in Bonn on the return leg which was nice. Very enjoyable trip and would recommend smile.

Suprised it took you that long to get there.
I drive Calais to Braunschweig (east of Hannover) 450miles in 7 hours.
Also used to do Calais to Solothurn (just south of Basil) in 7 hours.

440 miles isn't far when talking about continental trips.
For example, 580 miles Dunkirk to Munich is a possible run.

6 1/2 hours sounds about right to Stuttgart. You can cruise at 95-100 mph
all day in Belgium and France without causing trouble and once in the Fatherland
you'd better have six cylinders or more ;->

If you like drinking beer, eating sausages and chatting with
the locals you will fit in fine in Germany.

Prost !

Speyer is the sister Museum of Sinsheim, they have a few good things, the Russian space shuttle (not sure if the display is finished yet for it) a Submarine, the big Antonov, an 'as found' Stuka from the sea off St Tropez, lots more good stuff

The MB Museum itself is a masterpiece! I can only recommend anyone who is interested in cars, Mercedes or state-of-the-art museum architecture to come over to Germany and visit it. It is a multi-story building looking a bit like a rocket launch pad from the inside. After you have paid admission fee they put you in a lift and jet you up to the top floor. From there you walk downwards and get to see all sorts of vehicles, complemented by historic exhibitions and sound track/music.

In the basement there is a huge gift shop, a very good restaurant and a small branch of the MB classic car sales branch (offering as-new MBs from the 1980ies and 70ies).

+1.

We spent three or four hours there, I could have have done with a bit more time. I asked one of the staff where I'd get some info on my 190E, looking for specific info on carrying out an engine rebuild when the time comes. The very nice lady made a phone call and a few minutes later I was deep in conversation with one of the older technical guys, a gent if ever there was one and very matter of fact too, no suprise! biggrin. As we're saying goodbyes, he gave me his contact details if I required anymore info - that encounter made my holiday. Now I realise I've misplaced the contact details, so that's a bloody good excuse to go back smile
