Towns to visit

We have just got back from an impulsive trip which took in Leipzip,Nurmburg and Rothenburg.
Any other typically German towns with good beer and sausages to put on the list?
I have fallen in love with German beer as I only really get Belgian beer at home(France).

If you’re driving from France you’d be mad to not see the little spa town Baden Baden. Right on the edge of the Black Forest as well, so the driving there is amazing.

I used to be in a relationship with a girl from Magdeburg and she took me to Wernigerode and Quedlinburg which are nice characterful German towns with some lovely old buildings, plenty of good German beer and sausage! If you're in the middle of the Leipzig, Hanover and Berlin triangle, I can recommend.

These parts of the Harz Mountains used to be in the East Zone, so less well developed, but extremely attractive. A couple of rather fine Gastro-Gasthauses in Quedlinburg as well.

Bamberg Altstadt is a nice, little place. Either the or one of places in Germany wth the most breweries per square blah blah.

Very little architecture older than 1950 and the main shopping street is so dull,
it makes Dortmund look good. OTOH, the Cologne Cathedral is pretty good.

I also notice that Cologne is twinned with Rotterdam. I wonder which one is prettier ?

If you want world-class drinking, it's in Bavaria. Plenty of beer styles
and plenty of it. Litre steins by default and even the women sup half-litres
with their breakfast.

Trier to Koblenz, Stralsund, Rugen, that whole north coast, Berlin, Harz mountains as suggested, Sachsische Schweiz, Meissen, Thuringia, Weimar (Determined Old School Brits can visit Colditz - the locals will think you are nuts/strange but hey ho.) There really are so many fantastic places to go in Germany it’s hard to go wrong. Just avoid the major industrial centres - Neckarsulm comes to mind - but nearby you have Hockenheim, Schwabisch Hall, Langenburg. Go swimming in the Jagst.

Man, it’s paradise. Just point your car towards Germany and depress the accelerator. Particularly at 04.00 on a summer’s morning on a derestricted Autobahn.

Well I am back,a quick tour with Mrs S in the van.So far,Hamburg,Bremen,now foloowing some of the fairytale route.I want to go to Bonn and visit the Bike Discount mega store before heading home.

Frankfurt was a bit too much like Cologne for my taste.

Baden-Baden and the whole of the Black Forest is awesome, as others have said.

My vote would be Schiltach in the Black Forest, beautiful little town in the heart of the forest.

I live in Trier, the oldest city in Germany and it is beautiful! Just happens to be twinned with my home city of Gloucester too. Don't go there though it's a dump! Lots of nice areas to visit too close by as it's in the Mosel valley.

Frankfurt had a lot more of its pre-war architecture rebuilt. The central old town only a couple of years ago. While Cologne beer is closer to American beer, Frankfurt not only has a history with brewing, but also has a gastronomic culture that is pretty much unique - Applewine is nothing like cider.

If your cruising along the A2 back from Berlin after passing Hannover check out Bückeburg! Picturesque castle, nice old town with a decent brewery and a helicopter museum that has the tiger used in James Bond golden eye on display! Got married there.

Isn’t Trier marvellous? Where would you look for property in the Trier area these days, I was thinking of relocating?

Tbh whilst I quite liked Trier I loved Monschau (though my heart will always be in Bavaria

Looks pretty! Certainly worth a visit, though it is some way from Trier.
